Why Can't We Use Science To Birth Kids? Breaking Taboo Around IVF, Surrogacy

Is IVF the right thing?

In vitro fertilization or <span>IVF</span>, a concept that piqued everyone's curiosity when the film 'Good Newwz' released in 2019, isn't something new. For decades, couples struggling with infertility have turned to science to get a child. However, it is only recently that they have started talking openly about it. Science describes IVF as fertilizing a woman's egg and a man's sperm in a laboratory dish so as to create an embryo. This embryo is either planted inside the woman's uterus or frozen to be used in future. In case, the man and woman's reproductive cells aren't good enough to be fertilized, donor sperm and egg could be used to create the baby.

Despite extensive marketing and attempts to popularize the concept of IVF through films and documentaries, there is still a lot of taboo attached to it. Dr Neelam Suri, a senior gynaecologist at Apollo Hospital, said, "Since ancient times, the baby has belonged to mother and father. Now with IVF, you have a foreign egg or sperm that is getting fertilized, so people are worried about the resemblance of the child to the parents. That is the root cause of this stigma." However, as science advances, a lot of filtration goes before the final donor is selected, including his or her resemblance to the child's parents.

<h2><span rel="noindex">Surrogacy</span></h2>

Another trend that is closely attached to IVF is surrogacy, which is when a woman, known as the surrogate, carries and delivers a baby for another individual or couple. Here, the surrogate may use her own eggs or a donor. Speaking about the same, Dr. Soni said that while it is an excellent option for infertile couples, it has now become akin to human trafficking. She said that in many cases, the rich people exploit the surrogates. "It is also risky for the surrogate mothers. Women wth advancing age agree to it for money. It is extremely risky for them and in many cases, even life-threatening. And we believe that even if one surrogate mother could be saved, we'll do it."

<h2>Does government regulate IVF laws in India?</h2>Late Punjabi singer <span>Sidhu Moose Wala</span>'s parents triggered a controversy when they announced a child through IVF in March. The government initiated an investigation into the case as the mother was 58 years old. As per section 21(g)(i) of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021—simply known as ART Act—women seeking IVF services must be within the age range of 21 to 50 while men must be under 55 years of age.

Talking about the age of undergoing IVF treatment, Dr Suri said that she doesn't believe that the government should have a say in IVF and surrogacy. However, she opined that women should be careful about the risks involved. The IVF procedure carries complications and sometimes can lead to miscarriages, the birth of premature babies and even life-threatening risks to the mother. There are also a lot of pregnancy complications.

<h2>Why not use science to birth children, questions Isha Ambani </h2>

Isha Ambani recently highlighted the importance of normalizing in vitro fertilization (IVF) in a candid interview with Vogue India, drawing from her own experience as an IVF baby. The Reliance heiress said, "If there is modern technology in the world today, why not use it to have children? It should be something you’re excited about, not something you should have to hide," she remarked. Her comments resonate with many celebrities, including former US First Lady <span>Michelle Obama</span>, Kim Kardashian, Ekta Kapoor, and Farah Khan, who have publicly shared their IVF journeys.
