GLP-1 Drugs May Be More Effective Than Metformin At Preventing Diabetes: Study

Metformin has been long used to manage diabetes. But a major analysis based on more than 256,000 adults with obesity and prediabetes has found that people who take GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those taking metformin. The study also found that people taking GLP-1 medications were more likely to return to normal blood sugar levels and had lower risks of heart attacks, strokes, heart failure and death from any cause compared to those taking metformin.
More About The Study
The findings come from preliminary research presented at the American Heart Association's (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2026. Researchers compared health records of adults to both obesity and prediabetes to examine whether GLP-1 medications could help prevent the progression to type 2 diabetes. According to the AHA, the analysis included 256,492 adults, with an average age of 52 years. Women accounted for 76% of the participants. About half of the participants were taking GLP-1-based medications, including semaglutide, tirzepatide, liraglutide and dulaglutide, while the remaining participants were taking metformin. Researchers used electronic health records from the TriNetX global multicentre network, which included 104 institutions. The records covered the period from 2010 to 2023. The participants were followed for an average of approximately three years. The researchers matched participants based on factors such as age, existing health conditions, including high blood pressure and sleep apnoea, nicotine dependence and other medications. They were also 1.5 times more likely to return to normal blood sugar levels, suggesting that the medications may help reverse the progression from prediabetes in some people. The analysis also identified differences in cardiovascular results. Compared to the metformin group, people taking GLP-1 medications had:

15% fewer heart attacks

20% fewer strokes

25% fewer cases of heart failure

8% fewer cases of atrial fibrillation, a common type of irregular heartbeat

The risk of death from any cause was also 41% lower among people taking GLP-1 medications. Study Finds 46% Reduction In Risk
GLP-1 Drugs Could Be Considered Earlier For Some Patients
Most earlier research on GLP-1 medications has focused on people who already have type 2 diabetes. This analysis examined their benefits at an earlier stage, when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but have enough for a diabetes diagnosis. Commenting on the findings, study author Vinicius de Sousa Barzon Serra, MD, a research fellow in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, said, “The great news with prediabetes is that it’s still possible to reverse the progression of the disease.” He added, “This research may add to the case for considering GLP-1 medications earlier for certain patients, rather than waiting until they develop Type 2 diabetes.” However, Serra said the findings do not mean metformin should be replaced by GLP-1 medications. “The main effect these findings could have is on the shared decision-making discussion between doctors and patients exploring various treatment options, and the pros and cons for each,” he said. “Metformin is still a first-line treatment choice. It is safe, inexpensive and has a long track record. This is less about replacing one medication with another and more about discussing additional options with specific patients,” he added. Serra also highlighted the importance of lifestyle changes in preventing diabetes. “It's important to note that an essential component of prediabetes treatment is lifestyle changes to manage weight, including diet and exercise and considering medications, including metformin, based on each individual's overall health and any other medical conditions,” he said.
Weight Loss May Contribute To The Benefits

https://youtu.be/W8sT02MJsQI?si=aji7D0mupvSFbf0f

Robert Eckel, MD, FAHA, a former volunteer president of the American Heart Association and professor of medicine emeritus at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, said the findings were not surprising. “The benefits noted in this study likely relates to the patients losing weight, which is known to help prevent Type 2 diabetes,” said Eckel. He explained that preventing the progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes could also help reduce cardiovascular complications. “Preventing the progression from pre-diabetes to Type 2 diabetes keeps patients from having Type 2 diabetes, and it also helps prevent heart attack and strokes,” he said. Eckel added, “GLP-1s provide another option for prevention, perhaps as an add-on therapy. However, costs and access to these medications are important factors.” The findings should not be interpreted as evidence that Ozempic or Mounjaro is superior to metformin for every person with prediabetes. The American Diabetes Association's 2026 Standards of Care identify metformin as an option for people at particularly high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, including adults aged 25 to 59 years with a BMI of 35 or higher, higher blood glucose levels or a history of gestational diabetes. The guidelines also say that metformin has the most robust evidence for pharmacological diabetes prevention. While GLP-1-based therapies can be considered for weight management in people with overweight or obesity, long-term evidence does not currently support using glucose-lowering medications other than metformin solely for the purpose of preventing type 2 diabetes.

A child recently died in Lewis County amid an ongoing measles outbreak, marking New York state's first measles-related death in more than 30 years. The New York State Department of Health and Lewis County Public Health confirmed the death in a joint statement on November 2. Officials did not release more information about the child or the circumstances surrounding the death to protect the family's privacy. The death comes as measles cases continue to rise across the United States. New York had recorded 178 cases in 2026 as of October 24, including eight in New York City, according to health officials. Last month, Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency. The order gave registered nurses the authority to order specimen collection and testing for measles cases.
US Reports More Than 4,800 Measles Cases In 2026
Also read: EXCLUSIVE: Ex-CDC Vaccine Advisor Says Measles Outbreak Bigger Than Reported, Slams RFK Jr’s ‘No-See Evil’ Approach The outbreak in New York is part of a wider resurgence of measles across the country. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 4,852 confirmed cases as of October 29, 2026, the highest annual total since 1991. In an exclusive interview with HealthandMe, Dr Paul Offit, paediatrician and director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and former member of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, said that the reported number of measles cases in the US could underestimate the actual scale of transmission. “You can assume that's off by a factor of at least five." The CDC said 96% of confirmed cases this year were linked to outbreaks. It has also reported that at least 96% of cases have occurred among people who were unvaccinated. Declining vaccination coverage has contributed to the growing measles transmission. During the 2025-2026 school year, 92.4% of US kindergarteners had received the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, below the 95% coverage level generally needed to maintain community protection.
When Can Measles Become Life-Threatening?
Also read: 'It’s The Best-Studied Vaccine In Human History': Former CDC Adviser Busts Common Myths About COVID Vaccines Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain infectious in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left a space. Early symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. Small white spots called Koplik spots may appear inside the mouth, followed by a rash that begins on the face and spreads down the body. While many people recover, measles can cause serious complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain. These complications can lead to hospitalisation and, in some cases, death. The first is given between 12 and 15 months of age, while the second is recommended between four and six years. One dose is approximately 93% effective against measles infection, while two doses are about 97% effective, according to the CDC. Infants aged six to 11 months who live in or are travelling to areas with a high risk of measles exposure may be advised to receive an early dose. However, this dose does not replace the two routine doses recommended after the child's first birthday..

At 90, Japanese bodybuilder Toshisuke Kanazawa has built an age-defying physique that is a testament to his rigorous training of two hours a day for six days a week. Kanazawa is still able to compete against athletes decades younger than him. The 19-time national champion recently appeared at the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB) World Fitness and Bodybuilding Championships in Santa Susanna, Spain, on October 30, 2026. Although he did not finish on the podium, Kanazawa remains committed to bodybuilding and hopes to compete once more at 93. “I like to try doing things that nobody else has done, and more than anything I want to pursue bodybuilding for the rest of my life,” he told Reuters. In interviews with Reuters and The Guardian, Kanazawa has described how he has modified his exercise routine, diet and prioritised recovery to maintain muscle strength as he grows older.
Toshisuke Kanazawa Still Strength Trains For Two Hours A Day
Also read: Whey Protein For Muscle Gain: Do You Really Need 1.6 Grams Of Protein Per Kg? Kanazawa trains for approximately two hours a day, six days a week, at his gym in Hiroshima, Japan. However, his routine has changed with age. He no longer performs heavy exercises, including squats and bench presses, and prefers using weight-training machines instead of free weights. He said machines allow him to control movements and adjust resistance according to his physical capabilities. “I do what’s best for me and my body at this age,” he told The Guardian. His approach speaks about the importance of recovery when it comes to strength training in older adults. It also reinforces that exercise needs to be adapted to changing strength, mobility and recovery capacity rather than maintaining the same intensity throughout life.
Kanazawa Prioritises Muscle Recovery
Kanazawa says recovery takes longer than it did when he was younger. “It takes longer to recover from weights sessions than it used to, so I make sure I rest properly between sets and get around seven hours’ sleep a night,” he told The Guardian. Adequate recovery is important because resistance exercise creates stress on muscles, which need time to repair and adapt. Older adults may also experience age related stress when it comes to muscle recovery and the ability to build muscle. His regular meals include:

Brown rice: A source of carbohydrates and dietary fibre.

Natto: Fermented soybeans that provide plant-based protein.

Miso soup: A traditional fermented soybean-based soup.

Raw eggs: He has also described adding a couple of raw eggs to his miso soup.

“This is something I’ve been researching and want to learn more about. But ever since I turned 50, I’ve been building muscle by eating a purely Japanese diet which includes brown rice, natto, and miso soup,” he said. He also revealed that he has reduced his protein shake intake with age. “I used to have six protein shakes a day but now I have three. As I get older, it’s harder to stomach that much liquid,” he said. Kanazawa has also given up meat and fish and says he has never smoked or consumed alcohol. He said he wanted to encourage his wife, who had a chronic illness, and realised that he had lost some of his own strength after retiring. He eventually returned to competition and went on to win several masters championships. He believes older people should not automatically give up activities they enjoyed when they were younger. “I worry that too many of them give up on the things they did when they were younger,” he said. He added, “I want to be a bodybuilder until the day I die.”

https://youtu.be/PaGR4z2kIVg?si=zSxEO8f3wQXl7FY-

Strength Training Tips For Older Adults
Muscle mass and strength naturally decline with age due to a process called sarcopenia. This can affect mobility, balance and the ability to perform everyday activities. The World Health Organization recommends that adults aged 65 and older undertake muscle strengthening exercises involving major muscle groups at least twice a week. Older adults should also include varied physical activity that emphasises functional balance and strength on three or more days a week. Exercise intensity and type should be adjusted to individual health, fitness and mobility.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted tentative approval to Dr. Reddy's Laboratories for the first generic version of lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable for HIV prevention. The development raises hopes of making HIV prevention more affordable in 120 low- and middle-income countries, including India. The approval is considered “tentative”, the FDA’s standard designation for generics while the originator remains under patent. The development comes just 16 months after Gilead Sciences received approval for its original product, marking one of the fastest timelines for a major HIV innovation. Lenacapavir is the first twice-yearly injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) option for HIV prevention. Dr. Reddy's generic injection is expected to cost US$40 per person annually across the 120 eligible countries, with initial supplies expected by the end of 2026. Calling it “a moment of immense pride”, Deepak Sapra, Chief Executive Officer, API and Services, at Dr. Reddy's, said the FDA approval validates the company's efforts to expand access to twice-yearly HIV prevention across low- and middle-income countries. Also read: South Africa Receives 1st Batch Of HIV Prevention Medicine Lenacapavir
Dr Reddy's First Of 6 Generic Drugmakers To Get FDA Nod
In October 2024, Gilead Sciences signed voluntary licensing agreements with six generic manufacturers to produce and supply low-cost versions of lenacapavir in 120 low- and middle-income countries. The six manufacturers are:

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (India)

Emcure Pharmaceuticals (India)

Hetero Labs (India)

Eva Pharma (Egypt)

Ferozsons Laboratories (Pakistan)

Mylan (a subsidiary of Viatris)

Dr. Reddy's is the first among the six licensees to receive tentative US FDA approval. The other five companies are at various stages of product development, bioequivalence testing and regulatory filing.
What Will Cheaper Lenacapavir Mean For India?
At its August 11, 2026, meeting, the Indian drug regulator's Subject Expert Committee recommended waiving local Phase III clinical trials and bioequivalence studies for generic injectable lenacapavir applications submitted by Dr. Reddy's and Emcure Pharmaceuticals for PrEP. The proposed price of approximately US$40 per person annually could make twice-yearly HIV prevention more accessible. However, this is an indicative price for generic supplies, not a confirmed retail price in India. The eventual Indian price will depend on regulatory approval, manufacturing costs, supply capacity, competition and distribution. Its twice-yearly dosing may help those who struggle with daily medication adherence or face stigma and barriers to healthcare access. “For someone at risk of HIV, taking a pill every day to prevent a disease they do not have is a hard thing to ask. Two injections a year of a product that is almost 100% effective at preventing HIV changes that entirely.” “Generic lenacapavir has the potential to transform HIV prevention, and this is a significant milestone, but an affordable drug alone is not enough,” said Professor Saiqa Mullick, Director of Implementation Science at Wits RHI, University of the Witwatersrand, which partnered with Dr. Reddy's.
Lenacapavir: How Does It Work?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFIhWO4tjRc

Lenacapavir is a long-acting antiretroviral drug developed by Gilead. For HIV prevention, it is administered as two injections in the abdomen, providing protection for six months. People must test negative for HIV before receiving it. The drug does not treat existing HIV infections or prevent other sexually transmitted infections. Two major clinical trials demonstrated its high efficacy. In one study involving adolescent girls and young women in South Africa and Uganda, there were zero new HIV infections among participants who received lenacapavir. A second trial involving gay men and gender-diverse individuals also demonstrated high efficacy with twice-yearly injections.
