Parkinson’s Disease is traditionally characterized by motor symptoms such as tremor and dyskinesia, although non-motor symptoms, in particular gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms such as constipation and incomplete emptying, are often the first markers of the disease and may precede the motor symptoms by years. <br /> <br />GI dysfunction is reported in approximately 70-80 per cent of Parkinson’s patients, mediated in large part through the gut-brain axis (GBA). <br /> <br />Speaking to HealthandMe, Dr Paresh Doshi, Director of Neurosurgery and Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at Jaslok Hospital and Research Center, GBA, is an established two-way network that links the GI tract and the central nervous system (CNS). The connection is multifaceted, involving the vagus nerve, the enteric nervous system (ENS), the immune system, and a vast number of microbial metabolites and neuroendocrine signals.<br /> <br />“Constipation is seen in 66 per cent of Parkinson’s patients, attributed to disordered central and peripheral parasympathetic disruption, and can lead to alteration of the gut microbiome, which in turn worsens constipation, starting a feedback loop,” the doctor explained. <br /> <br /><h2>What Parkinson’s Patients Must Eat<br /></h2> <br />Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist at Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad, told HealthandMe that changes in the gut microbiome may influence inflammation, α-synuclein aggregation, and symptom progression. <br /> <br />Practical dietary principles for Parkinson’s patients include: <br /><ul><li>Prefer fiber-rich, plant-based foods (vegetables, fruits, whole grains), which support gut microbiota</li><li>Include fermented foods (curd, buttermilk), which may improve microbial diversity</li><li>Reduce ultra-processed and pro-inflammatory foods</li><li>Ensure adequate hydration (helps reduce the risk of constipation, a common non-motor symptom)</li><li>Protein timing matters: Levodopa competes with amino acids for absorption.</li></ul>Hence, lowering protein intake at breakfast and lunch and shifting the bulk of protein to dinner can improve drug response in selected patients with motor fluctuations. <br /> <br />These gut-targeted interventions are promising adjuncts to conventional Parkinson's therapy, and improving patient quality of life. <br /> <div type="Youtube" id="ZKQNQW1h92E" title="“I Thought I Was Slowing Down”: Expert Reveals Parkinson’s Warning Signs" thumbUrl="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZKQNQW1h92E/mqdefault.jpg"><url><![CDATA[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKQNQW1h92E]]></url></div><br /><h2>Parkinson’s Treatment With Dance, Art <br /></h2> <br />Beyond gut-brain axis, research has proven that unconventional therapy, like dance and art, can improve Parkinson’s treatment.<br /> <br />A 2024 study published in the Scientific Reports found that tango, particularly Argentine tango, improved Parkinson's symptoms like thinking problems or balance issues. It also led to a significant improvement in recognizing emotions on people's faces. <br /> <br />Dr Kumar said dance therapy improves balance, gait, and coordination; provides rhythmic cueing, which enhances motor performance, and improves mood and motivation (dopamine-related pathways). <br /> <br />Similarly, art therapy has been shown to improve overall visual-cognitive skills and visual exploration strategies as well as general motor function in patients with Parkinson’s. The changes in brain connectivity highlight a functional reorganization of visual networks, as revealed by a study published in Parkinsonism &amp; Related Disorders. <br /><br />Dr Kumar said art and creative therapies are also helpful in enhancing cognitive engagement. It may help with executive function and emotional well-being and provide a non-verbal outlet for expression. Despite this shift, early symptoms in working professionals often go unnoticed or are misattributed to stress, fatigue, or demanding work schedules.<br /><br /><h2>What Is Early-Onset Parkinson’s Disease?<br /></h2><br />Parkinson’s disease is a neurological condition that affects movement and coordination due to a reduction in dopamine-producing cells in the brain. When it occurs between the ages of 21 and 50, it is referred to as early-onset Parkinson’s disease (EOPD). In younger individuals, the condition often develops slowly and remains mild in the beginning, which makes it harder to recognize. Indian Actress Dipika Kakkar, battling liver cancer, underwent another surgery last month for a 1.3 cm cyst that reappeared.<br /> <br />Best known for her role as Simar Bhardwaj in the hit TV show Sasural Simar Ka, Dipika underwent a major tumour-removal surgery in June 2025. She also undertook chemotherapy <br /><br />In her latest vlog, Dipika shared that the unexpected recurrence has left her feeling anxious and overwhelmed as doctors evaluate the next course of treatment.<br /> <br />"The recurrence that happened with the 1.3 cm cyst has shaken me. I am a little scared now that it shouldn't happen again. I have started dieting, but I feel anxious," she said.<br /> <br />HealthandMe spoke to health experts to understand why cysts recur in liver cancer patients and how it's important to keep monitoring them.<br /> <br />According to health experts, a biannual liver scan is imperative, and it can detect signs of cysts.<br /> <br />“Simple cysts less than 2-3 Cm can be observed with repeat scans every 6 months to 1 year. Suspicious or malignant cysts need surgical resection and oncological treatment based on the histopathology and patient condition,” Dr Manjunath NML, Sr Consultant, Surgical Oncology and Robotic Surgeon, HCG Cancer Hospital, K R Road, Bengaluru. <br /><br /><h2>What Are Liver Cysts? How It's Linked To Cancer<br /></h2><br />Liver cysts are like bags that are filled with fluid. They are usually not cancer. Most people who have liver cysts do not get cancer. <br /><br />However, just because one has a cyst, it does not mean it's cancer.<br /> <br />“Cysts in the liver are typically harmless and unrelated to liver cancer. However, unusual types of cysts may suggest malignant changes that need further examination, particularly among risk groups,” Dr. Govind Nandakumar, Consultant – Gastrointestinal Surgery, Manipal Hospitals Hebbal, told HealthandMe. <br /><br />The experts noted that cases of recurring cysts related to liver cancer are uncommon. But they occur because of <br /><ul><li>the presence of cancerous cells, </li><li>regrowth of the organ, </li><li>chronic conditions like cirrhosis.</li></ul>“It is not very common for a cyst to recur after liver cancer treatment. If a cyst does return, it could indicate that the liver is not healthy. Sometimes, what appears to be a recurrent cyst may actually be an infection or a blockage. Regular follow-up with a doctor is important so that any issues can be detected early. That is why regular check-ups with a doctor are important. If a cyst grows or becomes problematic, symptoms may begin to appear. These can include <br /><ul><li>abdominal pain, </li><li>bloating, </li><li>nausea, </li><li>weight loss, </li><li>yellowing of the skin, </li><li>fatigue.</li></ul>“Liver cysts are fluid-filled cavities in the liver that may present as single or multiple lesions. The majority (around 95 per cent) are benign, while about 5 per cent may be cancerous. In many cases, the exact cause of their formation is unknown, and they may also be associated with conditions such as polycystic kidney or ovarian disease. The recurrence does not necessarily imply the progression of the condition itself; however, more tests may be required to determine whether cysts are malignant or benign. <br /><br />“Cysts with thick walls, septations inside, and solid components in them are more likely to be cancerous. If the cysts are large, they cause symptoms like pain, distension, and obstruction of the bowel or biliary tract,” Dr Manjunath said. <br /><br />The experts explained that diagnosis can be achieved by scans like ultrasonography, Computerized Tomography CT or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Suspicious cysts must be checked via biopsy to confirm malignancy. <br /><br />While suspicious or malignant cysts require surgical resection and oncological treatment, symptomatic cysts, even if benign, may also require removal. <br /><br />However, if a liver cyst is detected without suspicious features and is asymptomatic, it usually does not require any intervention, Dr. Manjunath noted.<br /><meta content="cms.next" name="cmsei" />
