Ayush Ministry, IndiaAI Join Hands To Boost AI-Driven Innovation In Traditional Medicine

The Ministry of Ayush and the IndiaAI Mission, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven innovation across the Ayush sector.

The collaboration aims to harness emerging technologies to strengthen the Ayush ecosystem by advancing research, knowledge management, medicinal plant studies, drug administration, and capacity building.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Kavita Jain, Joint Secretary and Chief Vigilance Officer, Ministry of Ayush, and Sudeep Srivastava, Chief Operating Officer, IndiaAI Mission and Joint Secretary, MeitY.

Dr. Jain said integrating AI with Ayush will open new avenues for evidence-based research, innovation, and knowledge management.

"The collaboration with IndiaAI will help leverage advanced AI capabilities across areas such as research, medicinal plants, drug administration and capacity building, making the Ayush ecosystem more technology-driven and future-ready," she said.

Srivastava emphasized the importance of combining modern technology with India's traditional knowledge systems.

"The MoU between IndiaAI and the Ministry of Ayush is a significant step towards enriching AIKosh with traditional healthcare datasets and will empower researchers and practitioners of traditional medicinal sciences through AI-enabled innovation," he said.

The partnership seeks to accelerate AI adoption across key Ayush domains, including:<ul><li>Research and evidence generation</li><li>Capacity building</li><li>Medicinal plant research</li><li>Drug administration</li><li>Knowledge management</li></ul>

As part of the collaboration, the Ayush Ministry will onboard the AIKosh platform, enabling the sharing of eligible health research artefacts, including datasets, metadata, AI models, toolkits, and relevant use cases. The integration is expected to promote collaboration, innovation, and the responsible development of AI solutions for the Ayush sector.

The agreement also provides the ministry access to GPU-based and high-performance computing infrastructure through the IndiaAI initiative at subsidized rates, subject to defined service-level agreements. This is expected to support large-scale AI research and address critical computing infrastructure needs in healthcare and traditional medicine.

Overall, the initiative marks a significant step toward integrating India's traditional medicine systems with cutting-edge AI and digital technologies, creating a more evidence-driven, technology-enabled, and future-ready Ayush ecosystem.

In May, the Ministry of Ayush partnered with the Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) under MeitY to expand multilingual access across Ayush digital platforms using AI-powered language technologies.

The initiative aims to make Ayush services and knowledge accessible in all 22 scheduled Indian languages by integrating BHASHINI's translation, speech, and voice technologies into digital platforms developed under the Ayush Grid initiative.

Ayush Grid serves as the IT backbone of the Ayush sector, driving digital transformation by integrating technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) across healthcare, research and development, education, and public awareness.

Additionally, the ministry has sanctioned the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in AyurTech at IIT Jodhpur under the Ayurswasthya scheme.

The centre will focus on Integrative Precision Health and Medicine by combining functional genomics, electronics, digital health, AI, and ML to develop evidence-based healthcare solutions.
