CDC Warns Of Resurgence of Malaria in US

While the US eliminated <span><a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health/malaria">malaria</a></span> in the 1950s, the country remains susceptible to malaria reintroduction, warned a new report from the <span>Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</span> (<span>CDC</span>). 

The agency’s latest <span>Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report</span> points to a 2023 outbreak in which 10 people across four states—Arkansas, Florida, Maryland, and Texas—were infected with locally acquired mosquito-transmitted malaria. 

<h2>First Locally Acquired Cases In Two Decades </h2>

The 10 cases reported after 20 years with no native cases highlight that although the <span>United States</span> eliminated malaria transmission in the early 1950s, the country remains susceptible to malaria reintroduction,” the CDC said.

The risk varies by geography, vector ecology, climate, travel pattern, and public health capacity. 

The report stated that about 2,000 cases of malaria and an average of seven malaria-related deaths are reported annually to the CDC. Most of these are diagnosed among travelers returning from countries where malaria is endemic. 

The cases from the 2023 outbreak were the first locally acquired malaria infections that were reported to the CDC in two decades. The report notes these infections coincided with the most imported cases since the United States reached elimination status in 1951.

The timing suggests that, after acquiring malaria while traveling, the patients were bitten by mosquitoes in the United States. Those newly infected mosquitoes then bit additional people, resulting in local transmission.

Further, it added that since 1972, the annual number of cases reported among US civilians has increased, and conditions in much of the country remain suitable for local transmission, particularly in areas where Anopheles mosquitoes are indigenous. About 30 small outbreaks have been reported between 1980 and 2003.

The WHO describes malaria as a life-threatening disease spread to humans by some types of mosquitoes, mostly found in tropical countries. However, they are preventable and curable.

"Malaria is spread to people through the bites of some infected anopheles mosquitoes. Blood transfusion and contaminated needles may also transmit malaria," as per the WHO. 

The first symptoms may be mild, similar to many febrile illnesses, and difficult to recognize as malaria. Left untreated, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness and death within 24 hours.

The WHO notes 5 <span>Plasmodium</span> parasite species that cause malaria in humans.

The early symptoms include fever, headache, and chills, which can usually start within 10 to 15 days of getting bitten by an infected mosquito. 

Some types of malaria can cause severe illness and death. Infants, children under 5 years, pregnant women, travelers, and people with HIV or AIDS are at higher risk. Severe symptoms include: 

<ul><li>extreme tiredness and fatigue </li><li>impaired consciousness </li><li>multiple convulsions </li><li>difficulty breathing </li><li>dark or bloody urine </li><li>jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin) </li><li>abnormal bleeding.</li></ul>
