Harmful Metals In Popular Tampon Brands Increase Risk of Declining Reproductive Health, Studies Reveal

Recently, several brands of tampons have been exposed for containing toxic metals like lead, arsenic and cadmium. Not only does this increase the risk of diseases, but it also shows how little <span>research</span> has been done on the female reproductive system and the large health concern it poses for the vast majority of women. The metals found in tampons are said to increase the risk of dementia, infertility, diabetes and cancer. 

<h2>A significant use of <span rel="noindex">menstrual products</span></h2>The average person who menstruates will use an estimated 11,000 tampons, pads, liners, and other menstrual products over their reproductive lifespan – approximately five years. These products contain various chemicals known to disrupt the endocrine system, which regulates vital functions like sexual development, metabolism, and mood.

<h2>Heavy metals found in menstrual products</h2>A recent study uncovered the presence of arsenic and lead in both organic and non-organic tampons. While the levels were low, it's crucial to remember there is no safe level of lead exposure according to the EPA.

However, the study couldn't determine if these metals leach into the body, leaving the potential health impact unclear. Study author <span>Kathrin Schilling</span> emphasizes the need for further research to understand if and how these metals might be absorbed.

<h2><span rel="noindex">FDA</span>'s perspective</h2>The FDA regulates menstrual products as medical devices but has limited authority over their composition. While tampons undergo a premarket review process, the agency doesn't approve individual materials used in these products.

The FDA's primary focus regarding menstrual products has been on addressing the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). They have implemented labeling requirements and educational campaigns to minimize this risk. However, the recent findings of heavy metals in tampons highlight a potential gap in regulatory oversight.

<h2>Study methodology and findings</h2>Schilling's team analyzed 30 tampons from various brands, testing for 16 heavy metals. They found significant levels of lead and arsenic, with organic tampons containing more arsenic and non-organic tampons having higher lead levels.

The lead concentration in tampons was alarmingly ten times higher than drinking water standards, while arsenic levels were lower but still concerning as it shouldn't be present at all.

<h2>Call for further research</h2>Schilling stresses the importance of understanding the effects of vaginal exposure to arsenic, as there's currently no data on this. Given the known dangers of lead, the findings underscore the urgent need for more research into the potential health risks associated with menstrual product use.
