Why Has FSSAI Banned The Sale Of Dabur India's Ghee, Honey & Other Products?

Indian food regulatory body <span>FSSAI</span> has barred the sale of select products produced by one of the biggest FMCG companies in India. 

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India prohibited <span>Dabur India</span> from selling its popular household products like honey, cow ghee, and edible oils with '100 percent' claims. 

<h2>FSSAI's Crackdown On <span rel="noindex">Dabur</span> India Products </h2>

On Monday, <a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health-news/fssai-retracts-advisory-on-a1-and-a2-milk-claims-what-you-need-to-know-and-how-it-affects-your-health-article-151035176" data-type="tilCustomLink">FSSAI</a> shared a social media post, announcing that it has banned the sale of a few products produced by Dabur India over misleading claims. 

In a Tweet, it said that the FMCG giant has been asked to stop selling products like honey, apple cider vinegar, virgin coconut oil, sesame oil, cow ghee, coconut water, coconut milk, and other products due to various non-compliances. 

The following violations were listed by the food regulatory body: 

FSSAI said that some Dabur products were being sold on the company's website with misleading <a href="https://www.healthandme.com/nutrition/lets-fix-our-food-india-launches-new-policy-to-fight-childhood-obesity-boost-nutrition-article-155158665" data-type="tilCustomLink">'100% percent' claims</a> like '100% Natural', '100% Pure', '100% Purity Guaranteed', '100% Organic, and '100% Tender Coconut Water'. 

FSSAI said that <span>Dabur Homemade Coconut Milk</span> was being sold with the claim '100% Purity', which is in violation with its rules. 

According to FSS (Advertising &amp; Claims) Regulations, 2018, the use of claims with '100%' is prohibited as it's an ambiguous term which cannot be verified. It further said that such claims can mislead the consumers.

Furthermore, its products like <span>Dabur Himalayan Organic Apple Cider Vinegar</span> and <a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health-news/delhi-high-court-permits-jntl-to-sell-180-crore-orsl-stock-despite-fssai-dispute-article-153022713" data-type="tilCustomLink">Dabur Organic Honey</a> were found showcasing Jaivik Bharat Logo without an organic endorsement by FSSAI. 

The Jaivik Bharat logo is specifically issued to authentic organic food products in order to distinguish them from non-organic items. It is meant to show compliance with Indian organic standards. 

The regulatory body said that by doing so, the company violated FSS (Organic Foods) Regulations, 2017.

<h3>Failure To Respond To Earlier Notice </h3>

This is not the first time FSSAI has brought these violations to the company's attention. In its notice, it said that Dabur paid no heed to an earlier notice which directed them to discontinue products with '100% claims'. 

It said that the company failed to take "satisfactory corrective action". 

Besides prohibiting the sale of these products, FSSAI has asked <a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health-news/bacteria-found-in-amul-milk-pouches-officials-urge-pasteurization-article-153599853" data-type="tilCustomLink">Dabur</a> to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 15 days.

FSSAI's action is part of its broader strategy to stop the sale of products with misleading claims and brand names. 

Recently, show-cause notices were sent to brands like Lotte India, Kubera Foods, and Ferns N Petals Pvt Ltd over allegedly misleading claims such as "100% Natural," "100% Vegetarian," and chocolate labelling issues. 

It also flagged Heritage Fresh Paneer for using the term "Fresh Paneer" to market its products. 

In June, brands like Nestlé, KFC, Open Secret, Emami Healthy &amp; Tasty, Storia Juice, Two Brothers Organic Farms, Healthy Master, Neuherbs, The Health Factory, Troovy, Healthy Choice, Organic Wisdom, Shine Organic, World of Organic, and Lota Water were sent notices for <a href="https://www.healthandme.com/nutrition/fssai-reveals-key-tips-to-keep-your-kitchen-healthy-how-to-spot-high-quality-vegetables-article-153742035" data-type="tilCustomLink">misleading brand names</a> and health claims like "organic," "healthy," "zero maida," and similar marketing claims that may violate labelling regulations.
