The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) published its 2024 Cancer Progress Report and highlighted a strong relation between alcohol use and six types of cancer. This comes in the light of increased cancer rates among the young adults.

As per AACR, 40% of all cancer in the US are associated with modifiable risk factors, which also includes excessive alcohol consumption, tobacco use, physical inactivity, and unhealthy diet.

Another study done in 2022 titled Association Between Changes in Alcohol Consumption and Cancer Risk reports that increased alcohol consumption was associated with higher risks for alcohol-related and all cancers. The study also said, "whereas sustained quitting and reduced drinking were associated with lower risks of alcohol-related and all cancers."

The study found that people who reduced or stopped alcohol consumption can decrease their risk of developing alcohol-related cancers by 8% and all cancers by 4%.

Six Types Of Cancers Linked To Alcohol Use

  4. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

According a 2019 report, in the US, 5.4% of the cancer cases were related to alcohol consumption. Research also shows that moderate to high levels of drinking during pregnancy can increase the risk of leukemia in the child.

Risk Of Cancer With Alcohol

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 505$ of new cancers and 5.7$ of all deaths from cancer happen due to alcohol consumption.

When the body breaks down ethanol, found in alcohol, it becomes acetaldehyde, which is a carcinogen. This compound damages DNA and stops the cells from repairing the damage and allow the cancerous cells to grow.

It can also affect the levels of hormones like estrogen, which are the messengers that tell our cells to grow and divide. The more cells divide, the more chances there are for something to go wrong and for cancer to develop.

Is There Any Safe Limit?

While alcohol is not healthy and there it is best to not drink it as per the experts, there are limits that they suggest.

For women, it is best to have no more than one drink a day, while for men, no more than two drinks a day. However, this is no way means a health advisory, and it is always best to contact your doctor for such advise.

The most prevalent of these seasonal diseases include gastroenteritis, an illness that infects the stomach and intestines, making individuals susceptible to dehydration, exhaustion, and, in severe cases, life-threatening complications.

High humidity, standing water, dirty food sources, and variable temperatures all combine to provide excellent breeding grounds for pathogenic microbes. The digestive system, sensitive to infection, one of the first to respond.
