Botox Helped Her Burp, 25-Year-Old With Rare Condition Revealed How Injectables Changed Everything

Burping may not seem like a big concern for most people, but Ayla Cardinal, 25, who suffers from a condition that causes her to not burp, explains it hugely impacts her life. However, her savior from this condition turned out to be <span>Botox</span>! 

In an interview with the People, Ayla explained that she spent her entire life unable to burp and dealt with painful bloating, strange gurgling sounds in her throat, and severe nausea due to a condition known as <span>Retrograde Cricopharyngeus Dysfunction</span> (RCPD), often called the "no burp syndrome."

To get any relief from trapped air, she had to force herself to gag or "air vomit" which would force the trapped air to release, an extremely uncomfortable process that impacted her overall wellbeing. 

After years of struggle, Ayla decided and raise awareness on her condition on Tiktok and left users shocked when she revealed how she used Botox to treat her condition. 

<h2>What is Retrograde Cricopharyngeus Dysfunction?</h2>According to <span>John Hopkins</span> Medicine, RCPD happens when the muscle at the bottom of the throat (the sphincter) does not relax when it is supposed to. This means gas gets trapped in the stomach and esophagus with nowhere to go. While it might sound like a minor quirk, the symptoms can be painful and embarrassing: 

<ul><li>Trapped gas causes intense bloating and pressure.</li><li>The throat often makes loud "gurgling" noises that others can hear.</li><li>Many patients have to force themselves to gag just to let the air out, a process they call "air vomiting."</li><li>Standard tests often show nothing is wrong, leading some doctors to tell patients the problem is all in their head.</li></ul>

<h2>Can No Burp Syndrome Be Treated?</h2>Laryngologist Lee Akst from John Hopkins explains that it can be treated with a quick outpatient procedure. While the patient is under general anesthesia, he injects botox into the throat muscle. 

The facial filler relaxes the muscle, finally allowing gas to pass through. During the procedure, he also uses a small balloon to gently stretch the area, making it easier for the patient to function normally. The recovery process has a few unique stages: 

For the first few weeks, patients might burp constantly and have little control over when it happens. 

It might feel like food goes down a bit slower, or patients might have some acid reflux for a short time. Even though Botox eventually wears off, 90% of patients keep the ability to burp forever. It’s as if the procedure "teaches" the body how to work correctly. 

For most people, one treatment is all it takes to fix the problem for good. Dr. Akst notes that these are often his happiest patients because something as simple as being able to burp completely changes their daily comfort and confidence.

<h2>Raising Awareness About No Burp Syndrome</h2>Ayla's recovery was not just about the medicine but also practice and patience. Her doctor told her to drink fizzy beverages to "train" her throat muscles to function correctly. Ayla shared her progress on TikTok, where a video of her finally burping went viral with over a million likes. 

Today, Ayla calls herself a "spokesperson" for the non-burping community. By sharing her story, she has realized that thousands of others suffer from the same invisible struggle.
