Death Rate Due To Alcohol Consumption May Differ By Beverage Type: Study Based On 340,000 Adults

Not all alcoholic drinks carry the same health risk, according to a large new study that tracked more than 340,000 adults for over a decade, finding meaningfully different mortality patterns depending on what people actually drank.

Researchers led by Ziyue Li, Bohao Tan, and Cassandra Desjardins analysed data from 340,924 UK Biobank participants, excluding former drinkers and anyone with existing <a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health-wellness/cardiovascular-diseases-lead-as-indias-top-killer-us-cardiologist-points-out-risk-factors-article-153921066" data-type="tilCustomLink">cardiovascular disease</a> or cancer at the start, according to the study published in Nutrition Journal. Participants reported how often and how much they drank, broken down by beverage type: red wine, white wine, fortified wine, beer or cider, and spirits.

The team sorted participants into never-or-occasional, low, moderate, and high drinking categories, and tracked deaths over an average follow-up of 13.4 years using death certificates and official cause-of-death coding. Models were adjusted for age, sex, smoking, physical activity, BMI, diet quality, and other factors.

Of 22,381 deaths recorded, high total alcohol intake was linked to higher mortality from all causes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other causes compared with never or occasional drinking, the study found. Even moderate total alcohol intake was tied to higher cancer mortality specifically.

But the type of drink mattered a lot. High beer or cider intake was linked to increased mortality across the board. Spirits showed harmful associations even at low levels, and at moderate-to-high levels. Wine behaved differently: low wine intake was associated with lower all-cause and cause-specific mortality, while high wine intake, especially white and fortified wine, was linked to higher mortality, including <a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health-wellness/dont-ignore-these-cancer-symptoms-oncologist-shares-the-early-warning-signs-article-154913509" data-type="tilCustomLink">cancer</a> deaths. Moderate or low red wine intake specifically was tied to lower all-cause, cardiovascular, and other-cause mortality.

Across 20 specific cancer types the researchers examined, alcohol intake was linked to higher mortality in 15 of them, including cancers of the head and neck, digestive system, liver, blood, breast, and reproductive organs, even after statistical correction for testing so many outcomes at once.

People who usually drank with meals had lower mortality than those who drank outside of meals, the study found, with the gap widening at higher intake levels. Younger drinkers, men, smokers, non-White participants, and people without obesity showed stronger links between alcohol and mortality than other groups.
