The <span><a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health/chikungunya">Chikungunya</a> Outbreak</span> in China has so far infected 8,000 people in the southern part of the country. As a result, Canada is now joining the list to issue a travel advisory. The outbreak in China has prompted Canada to upgrade travel advisory. As of now, Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has also raised its travel alert for China’s Guangdong Province to Level 2, urging travelers to take enhanced precautions amid a rapidly escalating <span><a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health/chikungunya">chikungunya</a></span> outbreak.

The alert was upgraded from Level 1 “Watch” to Level 2 “Alert” on Monday, following a surge of 2,892 new cases in Guangdong over the past week. CDC spokesperson Tseng Shu-hui described the outbreak as “very severe,” noting that imported cases have already been reported in Hong Kong and Macau.

Given Taiwan’s proximity to Guangdong and the presence of vector mosquitoes in the country, health officials are stepping up prevention and screening measures, particularly at international ports and ferry checkpoints linking Taiwan’s outlying islands with China.

Taiwan’s CDC uses a three-level travel health notice:

The region now joins Brazil and the French overseas territory of Réunion Island on the CDC’s Level 2 alert list for chikungunya. According to the CDC’s late-July update, over 250,000 cases have been recorded worldwide in 2024.

The CDC recommends travelers visiting Guangdong wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing, stay in accommodations equipped with window and door screens, and use mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535.

Those arriving from affected regions who develop symptoms such as fever will undergo blood testing and monitoring. So far in 2024, Taiwan has reported 16 chikungunya cases, all imported—13 from Indonesia and two from the Philippines.

<h4>Did Any Other Country Also Issue A Travel Advisory?</h4>

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also issued a Level 2 travel alert for Guangdong. Pregnant travelers are advised to reconsider visiting, as the virus can be transmitted from mother to child during delivery, sometimes leading to severe complications.

The U.S. CDC also highlights that two vaccines, IXCHIQ, a live-attenuated vaccine for adults 18 and older, and VIMKUNYA, a virus-like particle vaccine for those aged 12 and above, are approved in the United States, though neither is available in China.

Healthcare professionals have been urged to avoid administering IXCHIQ to individuals over 60 due to recent reports of serious cardiac and neurological side effects. Vaccination decisions should consider age, health condition, and travel plans.

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease transmitted primarily by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, the same mosquitoes that spread dengue fever. Symptoms typically appear three to seven days after a bite and include sudden fever, severe joint pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, and rash in about half of cases.

Unlike dengue fever, chikungunya often leaves lingering effects, with joint pain and fatigue sometimes lasting for weeks, months, or even years. Those at higher risk for severe illness include newborns, older adults, and people with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease.

One case in point was in a Chinese kindergarten, where an outbreak of norovirus infecting 20 children was traced to the AC system in a bathroom.

Surprisingly, properly serviced AC systems can also minimize viral transmission, such as COVID-19, by filtering the air effectively—testimony that maintenance is the defining difference between protection and risk.

Even if your AC is freshly cleaned, there's another sneaky way it can influence health: dehumidifying the air. Air conditioners tend to reduce indoor humidity to levels that can parch your nasal and throat membranes. These mucus membranes form part of the natural defense system of your body, catching and flushing out germs before they enter deeper tissues.

When they evaporate, they're not as effective, potentially allowing bacteria or fungi to more easily cause sinus or respiratory infections.
