In the US, men have a higher mortality rate than women in 13 of the 15 leading causes of death, with the two most common causes as heart disease and cancer. For many, the reason is men taking their own lives. Richard V Reeves, president of the American Institute for Boys and Men writes that the risk of dying from suicide is 4 times higher for boys and men than girls and women.

The data, observed from the year 2010, a 40% hike in the suicide rate for men younger than 30, which is now higher than for middle-aged men. Each year writes Reeves, around 40,000 men die by suicide. This is equivalent to the number of women who die from breast cancer. He also points out that more men in America are "dying in our house and hospitals" than in the battlefield.

The life expectancy gap between men and women also widened from less than 5 years in 2010 to nearly 6 years in 2022. This is credited to the increased "deaths of despair", which includes drug poisoning and suicide and a higher male rate from COVID-19.

Why Is Men's Mental Health Important?

The National Institute of Mental Health says that while the prevalence of several mental disorders is lower in men than in women, other disorders are diagnosed at comparable rates for men and women or at higher rates for men, for instance, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also states that men are more likely to die by suicide than women.

Researchers are also looking into the matter of why certain symptoms are more common in men than women in the course of mental health illness. The National Institute of Mental Health also mentions that men are less likely to have received mental health treatment than women.

Why Is It Difficult For Men To Get Diagnosed Or Receive Help?

The Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA) states that the reason why men find it difficult to get diagnosed or even mention the issues is because they face the pressure to "man up" or "tough it out". ADAA mentions, "The stigma of men speaking out is that it is seen as a form of weakness or not 'manly'."

As per Mental Health America (MHA), 1 in 10 men experience depression or anxiety, but less than half receive the treatment. Statistically speaking, men account for about 10% of patients with mental health disorders associated with eating like bulimia, or anorexia. However, they are less likely to seek professional help. MHA also states that over 6 million men suffer from depression per year, however, it gets underdiagnosed. More than 3 million men in the US have panic disorder, agoraphobia or any other phobia. At large, 2.3 million Americans are affected by bipolar disorder, and the age of onset for men is between 16 to 25 years old. In the US, the leading cause of disability is schizophrenia, and among the 3.5 million people who are diagnosed, 90% of them, diagnosed by 30 are men.

Brain inactivity can also cause such mental health disorders. Neha Sinha, a dementia specialist and CEO and Co-founder of Epoch Elder Care says, "Men especially face this issue, after they retire, they feel like they are at the loss of authority, and they start to lose control. It is thus important to keep doing things and learning a new skill to keep your brain active. While for women, since they continue taking care of the house, their brain stays active."

How To Identify Symptoms Of Mental Disorders in Men?

As per the National Institute of Mental Health, the common symptoms of mental disorder are:

  • Anger, irritability, or aggressiveness
  • Noticeable changes in mood, energy level, and appetite
  • Difficulty in sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Difficulty concentrating, feeling restless or on the edge
  • Increased worry, leading to drug abuse, alcohol, or both
  • Engaging in high-risk activities
  • Aches, headaches, thoughts that interfere with work, family, or social life
  • Thoughts of deaths

Is There A Ray Of Hope?

Reeves points out that in 2020, as per the public health goals for 2020, the US federal government included 42 goals for children, 29 for women and 18 for the LGBTQ+ community. Only 4 goals were for men. There is therefore a need to throw light on men's mental health and address the stigma.

Out of the 44 preventive health-care interventions, which exclude vaccination, which are covered under the Affordable Care Act, 20 apply to both sexes, and 23 apply to women, including 12 for pregnant women, and only 1 for men. It is the screening for an abdominal aortic aneurysm among men aged 65-75 who are smokers.

Therefore, there is a need to recognise men's mental health. Mental health issues and disorders can be treated, however, it starts with recognising them and talking about them.

While research shows women need more sleep than men due to brain function, hormones, and multitasking, females around the globe are struggling to get enough sleep, according to experts.

A 2016 study by the Sleep Research Centre at the UK’s Loughborough University found that women needed 20 minutes more sleep because of multitasking and performing more complex brain tasks during the day.

But, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), revealed that an estimated 30 percent of women fail to get sufficient sleep.

Hormones, mood disorders, and caregiving responsibilities, coupled with professional pressures and stress, are the major reasons driving up insomnia and other sleep issues among women.

“Women around the world face a higher burden of sleep difficulties because their sleep cycles are tightly interlinked with hormonal shifts that occur throughout life,” Dr. Janhvi Siroya Shah, Sleep Specialist from the University of Bern, Switzerland, told HealthandMe.

Gender Gap In Sleep: Why Women Sleep Less

The gender gap in sleep is real, as revealed by the recent ResMed Global Sleep Survey 2026, which showed that 56 percent of women get a good night's sleep only four days or fewer per week, compared to 50 percent of men.

Women were also 48 percent more likely to report problems falling asleep than men (42 percent). More than 50 percent of women felt waking up not feeling rested for 1-2 nights per week or more, compared to 46 percent of men.

The study flagged stress or anxiety as the biggest barrier to consistent, quality sleep (39 per cent), followed by work-related responsibilities (37 per cent) and household duties (31 per cent) among women.

Speaking to HealthandMe, Dr. Kirti Kadian, from the Department of Pulmonary Critical Care & Sleep Medicine at AIIMS Bhopal, said: “Women experience disproportionate sleep challenges globally, largely because their bodies undergo repeated physiological transitions that influence how sleep is regulated.”

The experts cited the main reasons as

  • fluctuations during menstruation,
  • pregnancy,
  • postpartum recovery
  • menopause.

All these factors can alter mood regulation, increase nighttime alertness, and disrupt the architecture of sleep itself.

Dr Kadian said that hormonal fluctuations across the life course -- especially during the menopausal transition -- can affect circadian rhythm, airway stability, pain sensitivity, and the nervous system’s response to stress.

“When these biological changes coincide with external stressors, such as multitasking, emotional labor or caregiving demands, women become far more vulnerable to insomnia and unrefreshing sleep,” Shah said.

The prevalence of sleep disorders increases from about 16–42 percent in pre-menopause to around 39–47 percent in peri-menopause and up to 35–69 percent in post-menopause, indicating that sleep disturbances become more common as women progress through different reproductive stages.

“Declining levels of estrogen and progesterone can disrupt the body’s sleep regulation and trigger symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats, while reduced melatonin may make it harder to fall and stay asleep,” Dr. Kadian explained.

In addition, certain medical conditions that are more common in women, such as thyroid disorders, anemia, and autoimmune diseases, can also negatively affect sleep and overall health.

How Poor Sleep Affects Women

Poor sleep also significantly affects both physical and mental health, increasing the risk of

  • metabolic disorders,
  • cardiovascular disease,
  • weakened immunity,
  • persistent fatigue,
  • reduced concentration,
  • irritability,
  • anxiety,
  • depression.

How Women can Improve their Sleep

The Harvard Medical School suggested that to get a better sleep cycle women should:

  • Create a sleep sanctuary by removing the television, computer, smartphone or tablet, from the bedroom.
  • Cut down or limit afternoon naps to 20 to 30 minutes
  • Avoid caffeine after noon
  • Get regular exercise, but not within three hours of bedtime.

Every year on March 20, World Oral Health Day is observed to raise awareness about the importance of caring for your mouth at every stage of life. This means starting from birth through later years. However, a visit to dentist is usually the last thing anyone plans when they think of a doctor's visit. Dental visits happen only when extraction or something bigger is involved. More often than not people ignore a follow up or a regular dental checkup to maintain oral health. Why so?

In a previous interview with Health and Me Lt Gen Dr Vimal Arora, the Chief Clinical officer at Clove Dental, who has 40 years of experience as a dentist and also served in the Indian Army explained how oral health is not just about a pretty smile. He explained that many do not plan a regular visit to a dentist because the problems that pertains to oral health do not seem "life threatening".

However, Dr Arora told Health and Me that oral health can in fact be the first way to know if anyone is prone to a chronic disease.

Early Signs Of Disease Your Mouth Can Reveal

“There is now scientific evidence, published in top medical journals, that shows how oral infections can significantly worsen pre-existing systemic diseases,” says Dr. Arora. This isn’t just a theory — it’s a medically established fact.

Take diabetes, for instance. People with gum infections often find it harder to control their blood sugar levels. “If you're suffering from diabetes and you have a gum infection, your diabetes will not be well controlled. In fact, it may worsen,” he adds. The same applies to heart diseases. Oral infections can increase inflammation in the body, potentially triggering or worsening cardiovascular problems.

This is concerning especially for those people who may already be managing conditions like hypertensions, arthritis, or respiratory illness. Poor oral health can actually sabotage their efforts to stay stable.

“Your tongue is a true mirror of your oral and general health,” says Dr. Arora. The correlation therefore goes beyond just gums and teeth. Dentists are trained to detect early signs of systemic disorders simply by examining the tongue's color, coating and texture.

A pale tongue might indicate iron deficiency, while a coated tongue could be a sign of digestive issues or a viral illness. “Sometimes, we ask patients if they've had their blood work done, based purely on what we see on their tongue,” he adds. In some cases, dentists can even detect undiagnosed diabetes or early signs of nutritional deficiencies.

What Mother's Oral Health Can Predict About Their Babies

Dr. Arora also highlights the overlooked risks that pregnant women face when they neglect their dental hygiene. “If you are pregnant and suffer from periodontitis or even gingivitis — essentially poor gum health — you are at risk of having a preterm or low-birth-weight baby,” he says.

This isn’t just theory; it’s a well-documented risk in obstetric dentistry. Pregnant women are encouraged to get dental check-ups not just for themselves, but for the health of their unborn child.

Despite these evidences, oral health remains one of the most neglected aspects of personal healthcare. Dr. Arora believes this is partly due to a lack of awareness and the perception that dental problems are not "serious enough."

“People often wait until they’re in pain before they see a dentist, but by then, the damage might already be affecting other parts of the body,” he says. Preventive check-ups, regular cleaning, and treating gum infections early on can go a long way in improving not just oral health, but overall wellness.

This often raises a common question. If you are staying indoors all day, do you still need sunscreen?

Dermatologists say the answer depends on your surroundings and daily habits.

Sunlight can still reach you indoors

Many people assume that staying inside completely protects their skin from sunlight. But this is not always true.

Dr Khushboo Jha, MBBS, MD, Chief Dermatologist Consultant at Metro Hospital and Founder of One Skin Clinic, explains that sunlight entering through windows can still affect the skin.

“While standard window glass blocks most UVB rays, which cause sunburn, UVA rays can still pass through. These rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are linked to long term concerns such as premature aging, uneven pigmentation and loss of skin elasticity,” she says.

These UVA rays are often overlooked because they do not cause immediate redness or burning like UVB rays. However, over time they can lead to visible signs of skin aging and pigmentation.

When sunscreen indoors becomes important

Dermatologists say sunscreen indoors is particularly useful for people who spend long hours near windows or in well lit spaces.

Dr Jha notes that individuals who work near windows, sit in sunlit rooms or spend time driving during the day may still be exposed to sunlight. “Even short periods of daily exposure to sunlight over time can contribute to cumulative skin damage,” she explains.

In such situations, applying sunscreen in the morning can offer an added layer of protection. A broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is generally recommended.

This approach is especially relevant for people working in offices with large windows or those who frequently commute during daylight hours.

What if you are away from windows?

Experts also say sunscreen use indoors is not always equally necessary for everyone.

If you spend most of the day inside a room with minimal natural light and away from windows, your exposure to ultraviolet radiation becomes much lower.

Dr Jha says that in such cases the urgency of frequent sunscreen reapplication becomes less important. The risk of sun related skin damage is significantly reduced when there is little to no direct daylight entering the space.

This means sunscreen indoors should not be treated as a strict rule but rather as a flexible part of skincare based on lifestyle and environment.

What about blue light from screens?

Another topic that often comes up is blue light exposure from digital devices such as phones, laptops and tablets.

Some studies suggest that prolonged exposure to visible light may contribute to pigmentation, especially in individuals with deeper skin tones. However, dermatologists point out that the amount of blue light from electronic screens is much lower than what we receive from natural sunlight.

Dr Jha says the effect of digital screens on the skin is still being studied, but compared to sun exposure, the impact remains minimal.

A practical approach to daily skincare

Dermatologists suggest viewing sunscreen as a preventive skincare habit rather than a rigid rule.

Dr Jha recommends incorporating sunscreen into your morning routine, particularly if your day includes stepping outdoors or spending time in naturally lit environments.

In simple terms, if daylight reaches your workspace or you plan to go outside later in the day, applying sunscreen in the morning is a small step that can help protect your skin over time.
