Historically, rats have posed a major problem for society, whether it was the bubonic plague or the fear of Weil's disease, which is a form of leptospirosis. A recent study revealed a concerning detail- the number of rodents are increasing worldwide at an alarming rate and if history was any warning, people should be very worried about keeping themselves safe. In a first-of-its-kind study published in Science Advances, scientists believe that this increase may bring about a lot of changes and issues to the people living in cities. This increase is particularly noticeable in Washington, D.C., where rat infestation have skyrocketed. Why Is Rat Infestation A Health Problem?Rat infestation is a serious problem because they carry diseases that can make people dangerously sick. They can also damage buildings by chewing on wires. These rodents can spoil your food and simple are just a nuisance. They can cause stress and worry. The study points out that simply using poison or traps isn't enough. New Orleans has been successful in teaching people how to keep their homes and neighborhoods less attractive to rats. Things like keeping trash covered and cleaning up yards can make a big difference. New York City is also adopting new ways of keeping the rodents at bay, like special trash cans that rats can't get into. These examples show that working together and being smart about prevention is the best way to deal with rats. The study looked at rat sightings in 16 cities around the world. They found that most cities have more rats than before. Washington, D.C., has the biggest increase, more than other cities like San Francisco, Toronto, New York, and Amsterdam. That's a big problem for our nation's capital. Only three cities, New Orleans, Louisville, and Tokyo, saw fewer rats. These cities might have some good ideas we can learn from. This study shows how big the rat problem is globally and that we need to work together to fix it. Scientists think that warmer weather, caused by climate change, is a big reason for more rats. Milder winters mean rats can be active and have babies for a longer time each year. Rats don't like the cold, so when winters are short, they have more time to find food and make more baby rats. Female rats have lots of babies, so even a little extra time can mean a lot more rats. The study says climate change is a big part of the rat problem, so we need to think about that when we try to control them.Experts say we can't get rid of all rats. They're just too good at surviving. But we can't just let them take over either. We need to find a way to live with them without letting them cause too many problems. This means finding better ways to control them and making sure our cities are clean and healthy. It's a hard problem, and we need to keep working on it. We want cities where people can live comfortably without worrying about rats all the time.
