Every year on March 24, World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is observed. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) data, 10.7 to 10.8 million people fell ill with TB, globally in 2023-2024. This has made TB the world's top infectious killers. While many countries have been able to successfully reduce the cases of TB, there has been resurgence of the disease in Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines. While in the United States and in high-income European nations, the infection levels remain low, however, the disease has not been fully eradicated. <h2>World Tuberculosis Day 2026: Theme </h2> This is why, this year's theme is 'Yes! We can end TB!' As per the WHO, this is a bold call to action and a message of hope that affirms that it is possible to get back on track and turn the tide on the TB epidemic, even in a challenging global environment. With decisive country leadership, increased domestic and international investment, rapid uptake of new WHO recommendations and innovations, accelerated action, and strong multisectoral collaboration, ending TB is not just aspirational - it is achievable. <h2>World Tuberculosis Day 2026: Origin </h2> The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that it was on March 24, 1882, when Dr. Robert Koch announced the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the germ that causes tuberculosis (TB). A century later, in 1982, the global health community recognized March 24 as World TB Day. In 1882, the disease killed one in seven people in the US and Europe, however, Koch's discovery was significant in the elimination of TB disease. The CDC also notes that TB germs may have been around as long as 3 million years. During ancient times, TB had several names, for instance, it was called: <ul><li>"Phthisis" in ancient Greek,</li><li>"Tabes" in ancient Latin, and</li><li>"Schachepheth" in ancient Hebrew.</li><li>During the Middle Ages, health care providers referred to active TB disease of the neck and lymph nodes as "scrofula."</li><li>In the 1700s, people referred to TB disease as "the white plague" due to the pale complexion of people with TB disease.</li><li>In the 1800s, people called TB disease "consumption." In 1834, Johann Schonlein named the disease "tuberculosis."</li><li>In 1909, Clemens von Pirquet invented the term "latent TB infection" to refer to inactive TB.</li></ul> <h2>World Tuberculosis Day 2026: Significance </h2> World TB Day is held annually on March 24 to raise awareness, mobilize funding, reduce stigma, and accelerate global efforts to end the tuberculosis epidemic. This disease kills thousands daily and is thus a critical call for action on prevention and treatment is important. <h2>World Tuberculosis Day: What Is TB? </h2> As per a Singapore Government Agency Website called Communicable Disease Agency or CDA, TB is an infectious airborne disease caused by Mycobacteirum tuberculosis.It primarily affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of your body, such as the brain, lymph nodes, kidneys, bones, and joints. The disease is transmitted through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes and usually requires close and prolonged contact with an infectious individuals. From physical problems like fatigue and vision problems, people who survive the deadly bacterial meningitis are likely to live with long-term fatigue and vision problems, as well as be at high risk of suicide, according to a new study. The study comes as the UK is experiencing an outbreak of meningitis in Kent, that began among students who visited Club Chemistry in Canterbury between March 5 and 7. Although bacterial meningitis is treatable, it requires prompt, often immediate treatment for better recovery. Yet patients are likely to face the risk of fatal or long-term complications -- from physical, psychological, and social impacts, said researchers from the University of Otago, The Conversation reported. The new findings, based on 16 cases from New Zealand, who reportedly suffered the fatal disease, showed that multiple chronic after-effects is permanent in some, while in others, it dragged on for years. The effects include: <ul><li>fatigue,</li><li>difficulties with concentration,</li><li>memory and emotional regulation, </li><li>persistent headaches, </li><li>issues with mobility, vision, and hearing.</li></ul>These conditions affected the patients' ability to work, study, and maintain relationships, which further affected their mental health, increasing their vulnerability for <ul><li>anxiety,</li><li>depression</li><li>suicidality.</li></ul> "Our findings demonstrate that bacterial meningitis is much more than a life-threatening infection. It is an acute disease with serious, chronic after-effects which are poorly understood and often go unrecognised," the researchers said. <h2>Kent Meningitis Outbreak</h2>According to the latest update from the UK Health Security Agency (HSA), 20 laboratory cases of meningitis are confirmed, and 9 notifications remain under investigation, bringing the total to 29 in the country. The bug that causes the infection has been identified as the known strain of meningitis B, and MenB vaccines will be offered to 5,000 students living in the University of Kent halls of residence in Canterbury. Meanwhile, the UKHSA chief executive, Susan Hopkins, said the outbreak "looks like a super-spreader" event with "ongoing spread" through universities' halls of residence. "There will have been some parties, particularly around this, so there will have been lots of social mixing. I can't yet say where the initial infection came from, how it's got into this cohort, and why it's created such an explosive amount of infections," she added. As per Trish Mannes, UKHSA Regional Deputy Director for the South East, even after two doses, the MenB vaccine “does not protect against all strains of meningococcal disease, nor against all infections that can cause meningitis. It also does not prevent the bacteria from being carried and spread in the community”. The UKHSA thus warned people to be aware of the signs and symptoms of invasive meningococcal disease, and to seek immediate medical attention if they or anyone they know develops these signs and symptoms. Being tall can have its advantages, but a new genetic study linked height with significant health problems, such as a higher risk of developing heart disease and endometriosis throughout one's lifetime. <a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health-wellness/new-flo-digital-checker-reduces-endometriosis-diagnoses-by-over-4-years-womens-day-article-153782545" data-type="tilCustomLink">Endometriosis </a> is a reproductive condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. While genetics and environmental factors together influence a person’s height, the stature can also prove to be a risk factor for determining the risk of atrial fibrillation, which occurs when the heart quivers rapidly and erratically instead of beating regularly, said the researchers from the China Medical University Hospital in Taiwan. “By integrating genetic data across multiple East Asian biobanks, we show that the genetics of stature is linked not only to growth-related traits but also to clinically relevant outcomes—most notably atrial fibrillation and endometriosis," said the team in the paper. "These results suggest that stature-related polygenic scores could help improve early risk stratification in East Asian populations,” they added. They analyzed 120,000 Han Taiwanese individuals and compared them with 27,966 controls with familial short stature (FSS) -- a harmless condition where people are short due to inherited genetics -- to find genetic factors. The study also linked a person’s height to overall body size and lung function, as well as cardiovascular traits and reproductive traits, including the age when menstruation starts. Their findings, published in the journal PLOS Genetics, identified 293 genetic variants linked to height and five linked to familial short stature. The genetic variants responsible for tall stature increased the risks of both atrial fibrillation and endometriosis. In comparison, the genetic factors for short statures offered a slight protection against endometriosis. The results proved that taller stature increased the risk of atrial fibrillation independently. But the risk of endometriosis was determined through menarche/weight in taller people. <h2>The Role Of Estrogen </h2> A 2020 study from Denmark shares a possible explanation for the link between height and increased risk of atrial fibrillation: the rising estrogen levels. Estrogen is a hormone known to promote the growth of the lining of the womb and is also believed to play a role in growth spurts during puberty. The study, published in the Annals of Human Biology, showed that taller and slim girls in childhood had a high risk of developing endometriosis. The study also marked a lower body mass index as an increased risk of endometriosis. While you may be buying fast-fashion clothes that are easy on your pocket and also give your children trendy looks, a new study highlights the risk of being laced with a highly toxic ingredient: lead. The preliminary research, based on lab tests of several shirts from different retailers in the US, found that all the samples exceeded the country’s federal regulatory lead limits. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission currently has a 100 parts per million (ppm) lead limit for children's products like toys and clothing. "I started to see many articles about lead in clothing from fast fashion, and I realized not too many parents knew about the issue," said Kamila Deavers, principal investigator of the study, at Marian University in the US. Deavers began the study after her young daughter’s lab reports showed elevated levels of lead in her blood from toy coatings. How was study conducted? The team tested 11 shirts that spanned the rainbow—red, pink, orange, yellow, gray, and blue. All brightly colored fabrics, particularly reds and yellows, showed higher levels of lead compared to more muted tones. "We saw that the shirts we tested were all over the allowed limit for lead of 100 ppm," said Priscila Espinoza, from Marina. The researchers explained that some manufacturers use lead (II) acetate as an inexpensive way to help dyes stick to the materials and produce bright, long-lasting color. <h2>Children At Greater Risk </h2> The researchers found the risk is particularly higher among younger kids as they tend to playfully suck or chew their clothes during play. "Even briefly chewing these fabrics could expose children to dangerous lead levels,” they found in the study, to be presented at the forthcoming meeting of the American Chemical Society. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), lead exposure can lead to behavior problems, brain and central nervous system damage, as well as other negative health effects in children. The agency considers children under six years old to be most at risk from exposure. Even low levels of lead in the blood of children can result in: <ul><li>Behavior and learning problems </li><li>Lower IQ and Hyperactivity </li><li>Slowed growth </li><li>Hearing Problems </li><li>Anemia </li></ul>In rare cases, ingestion of lead can cause seizures, coma, and even death.
