Postpartum depression is a common mood disorder experienced by pregnant women after childbirth, but when women develop this while they're still pregnant, it is called prenatal depression or antenatal depression. While causes of prenatal depression may vary from hormonal issues to fatigue, according to a new study, women with Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD) are more likely to develop perinatal depression. <h2>The Link Between ADHD And Prenatal Depression </h2> According to the European Medical Journal 2026, ADHD is characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, which could create psychosocial stress (relationship issues, stress over childcare) that triggers depression. Furthermore, ADHD also increases vulnerability because women with ADHD often experience emotional regulation difficulties, stress and anxiety, and sleep problems. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and these factors can increase the likelihood of perinatal mental health problems, said researchers from Australia's Monash and Deakin Universities. Despite the increasing number of women entering reproductive years with a possible disorder, ADHD is still highly underdiagnosed. This is largely due to an interplay of gender biases and cultural expectations of women and girls. Additionally, researchers from the National Center of Biotechnological Information (NCBI) found that nearly 58 percent of prenatal depression is found in women with ADHD, and nearly 70 percent risk of the same in the children of mothers experiencing prenatal depression. However, early treatment and detection can dramatically change outcomes for children with ADHD as they continue into adulthood, as well as women’s perinatal mental health. <h3>Other Causes Of Prenatal Depression: </h3> <ul><li>Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone can affect mood.</li><li>History of depression or mental illness: Women with past depression are at higher risk.</li><li>High stress or anxiety: Work pressure, personal issues, or life changes during pregnancy.</li><li>Lack of support: Limited emotional or practical support from family, partner, or friends.</li><li>Pregnancy complications: Health problems for the mother or baby increase stress and worry.</li><li>Sleep problems: Fatigue or insomnia during pregnancy can worsen mood</li><li>Financial or relationship issues: Money problems or conflicts with partner/family.</li><li>Trauma or abuse history: Past traumatic experiences increase vulnerability.</li><li>Medical conditions: Chronic illnesses or complications can contribute to depression.</li></ul><h3>Symptoms of Prenatal Depression: </h3> <ul><li>Persistent sadness or low mood</li><li>Anxiety or excessive worry</li><li>Irritability or mood swings</li><li>Loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities</li><li>Fatigue or low energy</li><li>Changes in sleep patterns (too much or too little)</li><li>Changes in appetite (eating more or less than usual</li><li>Difficulty concentrating or making decisions</li><li>Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or hopelessness</li><li>Physical symptoms like headaches or stomach problems without a clear cause</li></ul><h3>Prevention:</h3> Finding a supportive network: Connecting with other expecting parents allows us to share concerns. Learn from people who know what you’re experiencing. Call your local hospital and ask if they can recommend a support group or other resources. Making health a priority: Mothers should get plenty of exercise, Focus on good nutrition, take prenatal vitamins, and try to get enough sleep. Quit smoking and avoid alcohol, since these are dangerous for both the mother and the developing fetus. Better physical health often goes hand-in-hand with improved mental health. Staying active: Interacting with others and getting out of the house can have a major impact on the mother's mood, so make it a point to spend time with friends or go out with your partner. Try meditation: Do meditation and breathing exercises if the mother is feeling stressed or anxious. There is a connection between stress management and emotional health. Recent legal developments have highlighted the importance of advance planning for end-of-life care. A Living Will is something every adult should consider discussing and creating at some point. Conversations within families about individual preferences in the event of a terminal illness are an important first step, and these discussions should take place while everyone is still in good health. Individuals may have very different views about how they wish to be treated if they develop a terminal illness or certain severe, irreversible conditions. For instance, some may not want ventilator support, while others may choose to avoid ICU care. Some might accept ICU care but prefer not to undergo CPR. Others may prefer not to receive artificial feeding through tubes. Yet others may wish for every possible treatment to be attempted. A few may prefer to spend their final days at home. <h2>Creating A Living Will </h2> It should be noted that a Living Will does not impose any limitation on treatment for common medical conditions such as infections, surgery for curable illnesses, or routine hospital care. These preferences apply only to situations such as terminal illness—for example, advanced cancer—or irreversible conditions such as a persistent vegetative state. Creating a Living Will is now relatively straightforward. It must be signed in the presence of two witnesses and attested by a notary or a gazetted officer. The earlier requirement of countersignature by a Judicial Magistrate has been removed to make the process easier. Templates are also available online that individuals can use as a basis for drafting their own. Before preparing one, it is helpful to discuss the pros and cons of their choices with the family doctor. It is important to again emphasize that a Living Will is NOT about refusing all treatment, hospitalization, or ICU admission for routine medical care. Rather, it addresses only specific situations. When such preferences are clearly documented in advance, important decisions about withholding or withdrawing treatment in select circumstances become less contentious. Doctors and hospitals will no longer be hesitant to withhold unnecessary treatment measures in such situations, as it will already be documented in the patient’s own Living Will. Relatives also will not face the difficult decision of withholding or withdrawing futile medical treatment on behalf of their loved one. Essentially, the Living Will protects the patient’s wishes when they are no longer able to speak for themselves. <h2>What Happens Without A Living Will </h2> In a terminally ill patient who is unable to communicate, the absence of a Living Will often leads to differences of opinion among family members about what the patient might have wanted. This uncertainty frequently results in a collective decision to “do everything possible,” just to be on the safe side. Doctors are reluctant to override the wishes of relatives, even when they believe that further treatment measures are unlikely to be beneficial. As a result, the patient may receive prolonged medical interventions that neither improve the underlying condition nor enhance quality of life. Once started, these treatments may continue indefinitely until the patient dies naturally. This may take months, years, or even decades, and also incur huge costs. In the absence of a Living Will, complex legal procedures are required to withdraw these treatments — even if all the relatives are convinced that they should be withdrawn. <meta content="cms.next" name="cmsei" />

While once considered an old-age disease, experts are now seeing kidney damage in people in their 30s and 40s. The prevalence of CKD in India has jumped significantly, moving from about 11 percent from 2011-17 to over 16 percent from 2018-23 among those aged 15 and above. Kidneys are remarkably efficient that they can lose a vast majority of their function without causing any pain or noticeable symptoms. By the time physical warning signs such as foot swelling or fatigue appear, the underlying damage has already reached an advanced stage. <h2>What Factors Are Contributing To Kidney Damage In Younger People</h2><ul><li>Obesity: Obesity causes kidney disease by forcing the kidneys to overwork (hyperfiltration) to meet the metabolic demands of increased body mass, leading to structural damage. In addition, excess fat causes chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance, which together damage kidney filters (glomeruli), resulting in protein leakage (albuminuria) and progressive scarring.</li><li>Diabetes And Hypertension: Diabetes damages small blood vessels, causing hypertension (high blood pressure). High blood pressure then accelerate damages to the kidneys' filtering units, called glomeruli, which further worsens blood pressure and kidney function.</li><li>Smoking: It damages the kidneys by constricting blood vessels, reducing blood flow, raising blood pressure, and introducing toxins like cadmium, causing or worsening diabetes-related kidney disease.</li><li>High Salt Intake: Excess salt (sodium) is harmful to the kidneys because it causes the body to retain water, raising blood pressure, which damages the delicate filtering vessels in the kidneys and increases the risk of chronic kidney disease.</li><li>Contaminated Water Dehydration: Contaminated water has heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, and agrochemicals that directly damage renal tubules of the kidneys. Furthermore, they also trigger chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. </li><li>Sedentary lifestyle: Sitting for over 6 hours daily increases the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) by lowering oxygen flow to the kidneys, inducing fibrosis and increasing proteinuria. Every 80-minute increase in daily sitting time corresponds to a 20 percent higher risk of CKD.</li><li>Painkillers: They are generally safe for the kidneys, but long-term or high-dose use of pain relievers, particularly Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin, can damage the kidneys by reducing blood flow and causing chronic inflammation, known as analgesic nephropathy.</li><li>History in the family: A family history of kidney disease significantly increases an individual's risk of developing kidney problems, with roughly 30 percent of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients reporting an affected family member.</li></ul><h2>Why Early Screening is Important </h2><ul><li>Asymptomatic Nature: CKD often shows no symptoms until the kidneys are severely damaged. Screening (eGFR and urine ACR tests) is the only way to detect early damage.</li><li>Preventive Action And Delayed Progression: Early identification enables managing high-risk factors such as blood pressure and blood sugar, which stops or slows down the progression to kidney failure.</li><li>Reduced Complications &amp; Mortality: Early intervention is associated with a 48 percent drop in major cardiovascular events, reducing the high mortality rate associated with renal dysfunction.</li><li>Cost Management And Quality of Life: Detecting CKD early reduces the burden of disease, allowing patients to avoid dialysis or transplantation and preventing catastrophic medical costs.</li><li>High-Risk Target Groups: Individuals with hypertension, diabetes, obesity, or a family history of kidney disease need to be screened annually to prevent progression </li></ul> <h2>Screenings Options </h2>To catch issues early, the article recommends three standard tests: <ul><li>Serum Creatinine: A serum creatinine blood test measures the level of a waste product from muscle metabolism to evaluate kidney function. Healthy kidneys filter creatinine; thus, elevated levels often indicate kidney dysfunction, chronic disease, or acute failure.
