Maintaining balance is essential for leading a healthy life, especially for those over 50. Research indicates that individuals in this age group who can stand on one leg for at least 30 seconds are faring well as they age.
A recent study reveals that balance deteriorates more rapidly with age than walking speed or muscle strength. This research, the first of its kind focusing specifically on the elderly, highlights the critical importance of assessing balance in seniors of all genders.
The hope is that these findings will enhance elder training programs and help maintain their physical independence for longer.
The one-legged balance test serves as a valuable indicator of neuromuscular ageing in older adults. A 1997 study found that individuals unable to balance on one leg for five seconds faced more than double the risk of serious falls, suggesting a higher level of physical fragility and potential neurological issues.
The new study examined how long older individuals should be able to balance. Researchers discovered that, regardless of sex, the average time spent balancing on the non-dominant leg declined by approximately 2.2 seconds per decade among a group of 40 healthy volunteers aged 50 and older.
In contrast, balancing on the dominant leg showed a reduction of 1.7 seconds per decade. Interestingly, age did not significantly affect the frequency of swaying during balance tests.
Despite the small sample size, the study revealed significant age-related losses in balance, more pronounced than declines in muscle strength (such as grip strength or knee extension against resistance).
"This finding is important because measuring balance doesn't require specialised skills or advanced tools; it can be easily done by anyone," the researchers noted.
The balance tests lasted 30 seconds, beginning with participants standing on both legs with arms by their sides and eyes open. They then balanced on one leg with their eyes open, followed by a closed-eye test, while standing on a plate that measured their centre of pressure.
While all participants maintained balance during two-legged tests, results indicated that postural sway increased significantly with age. However, there was no correlation between age-related deterioration and swaying while standing on one leg. A certain degree of sway is normal; however, excessive swaying when standing on two legs may signal underlying issues.
According to an expert, "balance is crucial because it requires not just muscle strength but also input from vision, the vestibular system, and the somatosensory systems."

However, CDC statistics reveal that more than two‑thirds of U.S. adults fail to meet these thresholds. With an estimated 2,041,910 new cancer diagnoses and 618,120 deaths from cancer projected in the United States for the year 2025, incremental, sustainable changes may have disproportionate impact on national cancer burden.
