Siemens Healthineers announced on Tuesday that it has obtained regulatory approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) to manufacture a Monkeypox detection RT-PCR kit. This locally developed kit is a significant step forward in addressing the Monkeypox public health emergency. The IMDX Monkeypox Detection RT-PCR Assay will be produced at the company's molecular diagnostics facility in Vadodara, with an annual capacity of 1 million tests. The kit offers a faster turnaround time compared to traditional methods, delivering results in just 40 minutes. This enables quicker reporting and response to potential outbreaks. Validated by the ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Pune, the kit boasts 100% sensitivity and specificity. Hariharan Subramanian, Healthcare MD at Siemens Healthineers, emphasized the importance of accurate and timely diagnostics in combating Monkeypox. By providing India with advanced testing kits, the company aims to contribute to effective disease management and save lives. RT-PCR: A Test to Find VirusesRT-PCR is a laboratory technique used to detect viruses by examining their genetic material. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this test became widely known. It works by making multiple copies of a specific genetic sequence, which makes it easier to identify. The RT-PCR process involves several steps. First, the test searches for the virus's genetic material, which is like a tiny blueprint. Then, this blueprint is copied many times to amplify the signal. Finally, the test detects the presence of the virus's genetic material, indicating infection. The Monkeypox kit is a specialized form of RT-PCR test designed to detect the Monkeypox virus. It has been validated and approved by Indian health authorities. Why this Kit is NecessaryOne of the key advantages of this kit is its ease of storage. Unlike other tests that require strict cold chain conditions, this kit can be stored in areas with limited cooling infrastructure. This makes it more accessible in remote regions. Additionally, the kit has a long shelf life, ensuring its availability for extended periods. Another important feature is its accuracy. The kit is highly sensitive and specific, meaning it can reliably detect Monkeypox without confusing it with other viruses. This accuracy is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective disease management. The Monkeypox kit is a valuable tool in combating the spread of the virus. Its ability to quickly and accurately detect infections helps healthcare professionals implement timely interventions and control outbreaks.
