Researchers in Denmark published a study in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry that claims to have developed a new "breakthrough" pill which can mimic the benefits of marathon and other strenuous exercise without having to move any muscle. For now, the researchers are calling the pill LaKe, and it has been tested on lab rats to flush toxins and strengthen the heart. What Is It Exactly?Dr Thomas Poulsen, a chemist at Aarhus University who led the research noted that a molecule is developed that can mimic body's natural metabolic response to strenuous exercise and fasting. "In practice, the molecule brings the body into a metabolic state corresponding to running 10 kilometres at high speed on an empty stomach," he said. What Happens In Your Body?Following exercise, your body enters a period of inflammation wherein the levels of lactate and ketones spike and also triggers the release of appetite-suppressing hormones. This also flushes fatty acids from the bloodstream and reduces the risk of conditions like heart diseases, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Whereas the release of lactate helps maintain metabolic function, ketone helps in converting fat into energy. This is not possible to achieve through diet alone, and this is where LaKE comes in. This pill contains lactate and ketones without any harmful add-ons. What Can LaKe Do?This pill can control the amounts of lactate and ketones that your body produces and delivers the benefits without the difficulty of exertion. This helps those with injuries and any heart conditions. "It can be difficult to maintain motivation to run many kilometres at high speed and go without food. For people with physical ailments, such as a weak heart or general weakness, a nutritional supplement can be the key to better recovery," noted Dr Poulsen. The pill will soon undergo human trials, and if successful, it could be marketed for humans too.
