US Billionaire Bryan Johnson recently underwent a procedure called Total Plasma Exchange (TPE) with the aim of getting rid of all toxins in his body. The procedure involves the removal and replacement of patient's plasma and is gaining attention for its ability to manage and treat a range of diseases. "TPE removes all of my body's plasma and replaces it with Albumin. The therapy objectives are to remove toxins from my body. The evidence is emergent, " he wrote in a social media post. What is Plasma?Plasma is the largest part of blood and carries water, salts and enzymes, as described by Standford medicine. It, makes up more than half (about 55%) of its overall content. When separated from the rest of the blood, plasma is a light yellow liquid. What Happens In Total Plasma Exchange (TPE)?TPE removes all of the body's plasma and replaces it with Albumin, with an aim to remove all toxins. Albumin is a protein made by the liver that helps maintain fluid balance, transport nutrients, and support tissue function. It prevents fluid leakage from blood vessels and plays a key role in medical treatments. Low albumin levels can indicate liver, and kidney issues, or malnutrition. Previous research has shown that TPE can impact the treatment of autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders and blood disorders. It is pertinent to note that people with blood type AB are in greatest demand for plasma donation. They make up 2 in 50 people but their plasma is universal and can be used by anyone. Plasma exchange is a second-line treatment for all types of peripheral neuropathy refractory to conventional regimens, especially when there is a need for prompt control of disease activity. A review by the American Society for Apheresis, supported by other similar research, showed that plasma replacement aided Sjögren's syndrome. Johnson in a social media post declared, "Others use TPE for autoimmune disorders, blood disorders, neurological conditions, transplant-related complications, and replacement of missing plasma components."
