Health experts in Japan have successfully restored the vision of people. Transplants using reprogrammed stem cells have brought significant, lasting improvements in vision for people with severely damaged corneas. The study focussed on four patients with limbal stem-cell deficiency (LSCD), a condition that leads to blindness due to corneal scarring. All the patients participating in this, received corneal cell transplants derived from induced pluripotent stem (iPS), a cutting-edge approach to offer hope for those with this challenging condition. Three out of the four patents experienced significant, sustained vision improvements for over an year, while the fourth saw temporary gains. LSCD often necessitates a high-risk corneal transplant from a healthy donor or the patient's other eye, making this procedure a promising alternative. The four patients underwent this procedure between 2019 and 2020. Developed by Dr Kohji Nishida at Osaka University, Japan, this technique involves reprogramming healthy blood cells back to an embryonic-like state. These cells are then used to create a transparent tissue sheet, which is grafted onto damaged corneas.Cornea Is Vital For VisionThe cornea is a vital part of the eye, and protecting it is essential for maintaining good vision. To safeguard the cornea, it's important to wear protective eyewear when engaging in activities that pose a risk of injury, such as sports, construction work, or using power tools. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection can also help shield the cornea from harmful ultraviolet rays, which can lead to conditions like cataracts or corneal damage over time. Regularly moisturizing your eyes with artificial tears can prevent dryness and irritation, which can harm the corneal surface. Additionally, practising good hygiene by washing your hands before touching your eyes can reduce the risk of infections like conjunctivitis, which can affect the cornea. Finally, regular eye exams help detect potential issues early, allowing for timely treatment and protection of the cornea. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your corneas remain healthy and your vision stays clear.
