Once in a while, you must have come across weird or unusual home remedies that actually work. But have you ever heard of ants who can perform surgeries? Scientists have found and recorded proof of <span>surgical ants</span>. There are two kinds: one set that performs <span>surgery</span> among its siblings in the colony, and the other set is used by humans as <span>sutures</span>. 

A July 2024 University of Lausanne study found that carpenter ants carry out lifesaving amputations on their colony siblings. This is also the first case of a non-human animal amputating limbs that stops the infection from spreading. 

The researchers found that the bites made in ants' bodies by other ants were not random, but well thought and had a survival rate of over 90%. The three ants in the experiment who did not have their legs amputated died. 

Most ants also have salivary secretions with antimicrobial properties, which help to control bacterial infection when they lick wounds. Carpenter ants therefore use both, the surgical incision and their salivary glands to prevent the infection from spreading in amputated limbs. 

The study found that the ants alter the treatment as per the need of the injury. The experiment found that when the femur was damaged, the ants amputated near the body and removed the whole leg. The upper part of the leg contains a muscle mass that can lead to microbial infection. This is why a high amputation means that the patient will more likely survive. 

Ants treat damaged tibiae, which is a condition that may lead to a low post-amputation survival rate. It is treated by licking. This removes the dirt from the wound and cleans the wound up to prevent infection. 

<h4><span rel="noindex">Ants As Sutures</span> </h4>

In ancient India, and in parts of Africa, and South America, this method was used to stitch open wounds. When people went to the battlefield with limited medical resources, they used wild ants as sutures. 

In India, the weaver <span>ant</span> (Oecophylla smaragdina) was used for the same. The wounded person would the edges of the wound together and allow the ant to bite across the cut. As the ant's mandibles were firmly clamped onto the skin, the body was removed and the head was kept in the same place to hold the wound closed.

In parts of Africa, the Dorylus or driver ant, known for its strong jaws was used by indigenous tribes. They clamped down on the wound tightly, and the heads remained attached, acting as natural sutures. 

Similarly, in South American regions too, people used ants to treat wounds, where their bodies were removed and heads were used as suture. 

It was also safe because ants are not carriers of any infection or bacteria, rather their saliva works as antimicrobial.

While many people may be focused on the tools used, and how it can hurt your eye with one wrong move, the glue used can also be a big reason for hurting your eye health. 

<h2>Chemical Culprit: <span rel="noindex">Formaldehyde</span> </h2>

In an Instagram video, the doctor explained that certain eyelash glues can release formaldehyde, a chemical also used to preserve bodies. He cautioned that while fake eyelashes are increasingly popular, the adhesive often contains this chemical. Formaldehyde can lead to allergic reactions, thinning, and even permanent loss of natural eyelashes. The doctor further stated that in very rare instances, it could even result in blindness. To reduce this risk, he advises either avoiding fake eyelashes or opting for formaldehyde-free adhesives. 

<h2>Why is Formaldehyde in Eyelash Glue? </h2>

Experts explain that formaldehyde helps make lash glue last longer and stick better. However, even in small amounts, this chemical can trigger problems like shortness of breath, headaches, and skin irritation. 

A 2022 study published by the <span>American Contact Dermatitis Society</span> found that a significant number of eyelash glues contained formaldehyde. Specifically, 75% of 20 professional products and four out of 17 consumer glues released the chemical. Surprisingly, only two of the consumer glues actually listed formaldehyde as an ingredient. 

According to a lash retailer, <span>Lash Base</span>, the main ingredient in all lash adhesives is cyanoacrylate, which is made from formaldehyde. They state that after cyanoacrylate is formed, the lash adhesive goes through a purification process to remove excess formaldehyde. This process purifies the glue, making it safe for use and leaving only trace amounts of the chemical behind. 

Given these warnings, it's always wise to be cautious and consider the ingredients in your beauty products.

A new study has found that people hospitalized with Covid-19 who developed acute <span>kidney injury</span> (AKI) had better outcomes if they had received a <span>Covid</span> vaccine compared to those who were unvaccinated. The research offers fresh insight into how vaccines help beyond preventing severe respiratory symptoms—this time, by lowering long-term risks for kidney patients.

<h4>Understanding Acute Kidney Injury and Covid-19</h4>

Acute kidney injury is a common complication seen in people infected with the Covid-19 virus. Studies estimate that as many as 46 percent of hospitalized Covid patients may experience some form of AKI. While some cases are mild and reversible, others are serious enough to require dialysis and may lead to lasting kidney damage or even death. Despite being a known risk, the long-term outcomes of AKI in Covid patients haven’t been well studied—until now.

Conducted by a team from the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), the study examined nearly 3,500 patients hospitalized with Covid-19 between March 2020 and March 2022. Out of these, 972 individuals developed acute kidney injury. Among them, 411 were unvaccinated and 467 had received at least two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccines, or one dose of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine.

Published in the peer-reviewed journal Kidney Medicine, the study found clear benefits of vaccination. Vaccinated patients were significantly more likely to survive, less likely to require ongoing dialysis, and faced fewer long-term risks compared to those who hadn’t been vaccinated.

<h4>Lower Need for Dialysis in Vaccinated Patients</h4>

One of the key findings was that vaccinated patients were less dependent on dialysis, especially a type used for critically ill individuals called continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). About 15.8 percent of unvaccinated patients needed CRRT, compared to just 10.9 percent of vaccinated patients.

This difference carried over even after discharge. Unvaccinated patients were found to be 2.56 times more likely to continue needing dialysis after leaving the hospital.

<h4>Survival Rates Significantly Better With Vaccination</h4>

The most alarming gap emerged in survival outcomes. The study found that unvaccinated patients had a 5.54 times higher risk of dying while in the hospital. Even more strikingly, they were 4.78 times more likely to die during long-term follow-up than those who had been vaccinated.

These statistics underline not only the short-term protection that Covid vaccines offer but also their role in reducing longer-term complications, especially in vulnerable patients with other serious conditions like AKI.

<h4>Experts Urge Vaccination to Reduce Complications</h4>

Commenting on the findings, researchers stressed the importance of vaccination as a protective measure against the worst outcomes of Covid-19. “The Covid vaccine is an important intervention that can decrease the chances of developing complications from the Covid-19 infection in patients hospitalised with acute kidney injuries,” said the lead researcher from UCLA.

They further advised that individuals should discuss vaccination with their healthcare providers, especially those at risk of kidney complications. Avoiding dialysis can drastically improve a person’s quality of life and reduce the risk of further medical issues.
