Men's Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each June to spread awareness around the issue of mental health that men suffer but due to social stigma cannot talk about it. As per the National Institute of Mental Health, only 40% of men with reported mental illness receive care, compared to 52% of women. This is due to the stigma that surrounds men, disabling them from asking for help and sharing their mental struggle. As per a 2024 study by Griffith, without access to appropriate mental health services, men can fall victim to two of the most common mental health illnesses that persist: substance abuse and depression. As per the National center for Biotechnology Information, approximately 20% of men in the US abuse alcohol during their lives. Mental Health America 2024 report notes that approximately 6 million American men suffer from depression every year. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), out of the 3.8% of the population that experiences depression, 5% of them are adults. Among this 4% are men, while 6% are women. WHO also notes that the lower number could be the reason for men less likely than woman asking for help, and more likely to die by suicide. The major reason, notes WHO, is the sociocultural barrier and the norms of masculinity that identifies men as self-reliance. It is true that conversations around men's mental health are difficult to start, however, in the past too, people have spoken about it, hoping that it would ease for others to come.
