Mom of 3 Got Diagnosed With Stage 4 Cancer After Doctors Dismissed Her Symptoms As "Just A Period"

For months, Charley Jayne Law, 31, endured heavy bleeding, passing blood clots the size of her hands. Repeatedly visiting a London hospital for medical attention on several occasions in September and December 2024, she was repeatedly sent away by male medics who insisted it was "just your period." No examination was ever performed, no emergency tests were prescribed. It was not until after prolonged suffering that Charley was finally sent to a gynecologist at another hospital. On January 27, 2025, after she had been subjected to several tests, she was diagnosed with stage 4 cervical cancer—incurable but treatable.

The failure to detect Charley's symptoms accurately resulted not only in the delay of her diagnosis but also exacerbated her illness. By the time she saw competent medical care, her body was severely weakened to the point where her weight decreased from 168 lbs to merely 98 lbs. The extremity of her disease necessitated that she make an unthinkable choice—placing her children in emergency foster care so that she might be hospitalized and receive treatment.

In spite of her worsening condition, Charley remained a devoted mom, coordinating school pickups, caring for her toddler, doing the household chores, and showing up at doctor visits. "My body was on the brink of collapsing, but I was still a mother," she says. "I pleaded with social services, the kids' school, anybody—but I had to get by until my body just couldn't.

Charley recalls the day she knew something was gravely amiss. On January 16, 2025, when she finally got to see a gynecologist, the look on the doctor's face told her everything. "Not even ten seconds into the exam, I knew. She had a really bad poker face," Charley describes. A specialist nurse was called in right away, confirming her worst fears.

Being told she had advanced cervical <span><a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health/cancer">cancer</a></span> shattered her world. But the heartbreak extended beyond her own suffering—her children, all with additional needs, struggled to understand why their mother couldn’t simply come home. “My daughter is still a baby who just wants her mommy,” she says. “My boys don’t understand why I can’t be there for them.”

Charley is now building up strength ahead of chemotherapy. Although the cancer is not curable, treatment can keep her around her family longer, and that's what she clings to. "All I want is to be here as long as I can for my babies," she says. "I want to make as many memories as possible."

To help Charley, her loved ones created a fundraiser in the hopes of granting her and her children an opportunity to create permanent memories together. "She does not want her kids to think she has left them behind," says Julie Mullan, one of Charley's family members who spearheaded the initiative. The money will be used toward a vacation for Charley and her children, an opportunity to leave their circumstances behind, at least temporarily.

Charley's tragic ordeal is not unique. Women's health issues have historically been dismissed in medical environments, too often written off as hormonal imbalances, anxiety, or, in Charley's instance, a normal menstrual cycle. Research has indicated that women are less likely than men to be listened to in emergency rooms and more likely to experience delays in diagnosis for life-threatening illnesses.

Charley's case is a heartbreaking reminder of the need for doctors to listen to patients—particularly women who present severe and abnormal symptoms. If her complaints were given the proper attention earlier, her cancer could have been detected earlier and treated when it was still more curable.

After Charley's diagnosis, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust issued a statement sympathizing with her and inviting her to contact them about her experience. But the harm is done. Charley's experience underlines the imperative need for systemic reform in the way women's health issues are evaluated and prioritized.

Charley wants other women to stand up for themselves and demand improved medical care. "I don't want anyone else to have to do this," she says. "We know our bodies. We know when something is wrong. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

As Charley gets ready for chemotherapy, she is thinking about her children and the remaining time she has. "They have been my rocks," she says. "Their world has been turned upside down, but they are amazing. I want them to have as many happy moments with me as possible."

Her battle is far from over, and her tale is a strong reminder of the power of a mother's love—and the urgent need for improved healthcare for women everywhere.
