Diabetes is one of the most common conditions that people can either develop or experience due to family history. While it is a lifelong condition, it can be controlled and with a few changes in your lifestyle, you can enjoy the same old life that you did before your diagnosis. There are many signs of diabetes and here are a few. If you experience them you must go and consult your doctor and get tested. 1. Shin spotsThese are round or oval, brown spots on your shins. They are usually harmless but can be a sign of diabetes. Their medical name is diabetic dermopathy and it is also called the spotted leg syndrome.2. Dark velvety patchesA dark, thick patch of skin on your neck, armpit, or groin could be a sign of pre-diabetes. The medical name for this velvety skin condition is acanthosis nigricans. This is often the first sign of Diabetes. 3. Hard, thick skinThis can develop on your upper back, shoulders, or neck if you have diabetes. Your skin slowly tightens and hardens over the years. The condition is painless but should be promptly reported to your doctor.4. Wounds taking longer to healPoor circulation from diabetes can make it hard for wounds to heal, especially on the feet. These are also known as diabetic ulcers that happen from high blood sugar, which in turn leads to poor blood circulation and nerve damage5. Outbreak of small bumpsThese tender and itchy bumps can appear if your diabetes is not well controlled. When your diabetes is not controlled, it leads to extremely high levels of triglycerides which is a type of fat that circulates in the blood and is also called eruptive xanthomatosis.6. Yellowish bumps around eyelidsThese can be a sign of high blood fat levels from poorly controlled diabetes. When there are high levels of fat in your blood, your body develops yellow or yellowish orange in colour bumps around your eyelid regardless of your skin colour. Medically known as xanthelasma.7. Frequent infectionsDiabetes can make it harder to fight off infections like yeast infections. When your immune system is weak the usual viruses and infections that would not have bothered you otherwise may become a big deal and make your risk much higher of contracting them. They can develop in your mouth or your genitals.8. Several skin tagsHaving a lot of skin tags may be a sign of type 2 diabetes. Although they are harmless growths, they can appear anywhere in your body and are firmly fixed on your skin, often dangling from your skin as well. The medical names for the same are acrochordons9. Cluster of small bumps This may be a sign of diabetes, especially if the bumps come and go. Several studies suggest that people who have diabetes may experience this raised bumps and skin condition also known as granuloma annulare. Although it is not concrete evidence you can go get tested just to be safe.10. Yellow, red, brown, or purplish patchesThese painless patches on your shins can be a sign of diabetes. They resemble bruises and are more often seen in people who have a lighter skin tone. The medical name for this is necrobiosis lipoidica. They grow slowly and may appear yellow, reddish, brown, or purplish
