The talk of the town today is to strike a balance between your work and personal life. With the pandemic and work-from-home jobs, these lines are getting blurred. Many studies have shown that overworking and not getting personal time can be detrimental to one's mental health.Recently, the news of a 30-year-old Chinese man's death who had worked straight for 104 days with just one day off has baffled the world. What Can Happen If You Overwork?According to a 2015 study published in the British Medical Journal titled Long working hours and alcohol use: review and meta-analysis of published studies and unpublished individual data, states that working more than 40 hours per week can make you likely to drink "risky" amounts of alcohol. Another study by Stanford stated that overworking does not mean being productive as people who worked 70 hours per week did not get more work done than those who worked 56 hours. The Atlantic reports that to maintain a perfect work-break balance, one must take a 17-minute long break in every 52 minutes of work. As overworking can lead to health issues, including daytime fatigue, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. What Happened to the Chinese Man?The 30-year-old man who died from an organ failure after working for 104 days with only one rest day has put the Chinese work culture under scrutiny. The Zhenjiang province court also ruled that the company where the man worked was 20 per cent responsible for his death. The man was identified as A'bao. Reason For DeathThe reason is stated as multiple organ failure due to pneumococcal infection that happened due to a weakened immune system. A 2023 research by the Sleep Foundation found that there are links between sleep and physical health and that not getting enough rest can throw off a person's immune system. For A'bao, he signed a contract from February to May last year where he got just one rest day on April 6. On May 25, he took a sick day off as he felt unwell and his condition deteriorated rapidly on May 28. After being rushed to hospital, he was diagnosed with a lung infection and respiratory failure. He died on June 1. How Does Sleep Affect The Immune SystemAccording to the research, sleep provides essential support to the immune system that enables a well-balanced immune defence. As per the Chinese Labour Law, the mandate of working is 8 hours per day with an average of 44 hours per week. The court ruled that the company violated the Chinese Labour laws and awarded the family for a total of 400,000 yuan or 56,000 USD. Right To DisconnectThe news is that Australia has adopted a new law that allows employees the right to refuse to check or respond to their work calls or emails. This prevents unpaid overtime and helps employees to have a work-life balance. A similar bill called the Employment (Amendment) Bill 2022 is also pending in the Kenyan Senate. The first country to implement the right to disconnect for employees was France, in 2017. It made it mandatory for companies to have over 50 employees to negotiate particular hours where employees are not expected to reply to work messages. Spain also adopted the right to disconnect law in 2021, giving employees the freedom to not respond to work-related communication beyond their working hours. In 2018, Belgium also applied the right to disconnect to its government employees. In Italy too, workers have the right to ignore and not reply to work-related calls or emails after working hours. On the list is also Ireland which adopted the same law in 2018, with Portugal adopting it in 2020.
