The aim of this day is to draw attention to the essential role that anaesthesia plays in the medical care. It also serves as a reminder to recognise the efforts of anesthesiologists, who are essential to the success of surgeries. 

This day is also credited for promoting advancements in anaesthesia practice to improve healthcare operations.

On 16 October 1846, Diethyl ether anaesthesia, for the first time in history, was successfully demonstrated. It was administered by a Boston dentist William TG Morton to a music teacher Eben Frost. Morton became the first to publicly demonstrate the use of diethyl ether as a general anesthetic at Massachusetts General Hospital. 

The World Anaesthesia Day therefore honours the successful administration of the first anaesthesia and invites medical professionals worldwide to commemorate and celebrate this milestone. 

Ever since the first anaesthesia was safely and publicly administered, its use for safe medical procedure was encouraged in the medical care. His work also led to the adoption and promotion of contemporary anaesthesia methods in the medical field today. 

This year's theme is "Workforce Well Being". This theme features the important role that anaesthesia plays in the treatment of cancer. This also encourages participants to campaign for the increase awareness and support the expansion of anaesthesia services to improve the prognosis of cancer patients. Around 80% of patients with cancer require anaesthesia for treatment or palliative care. 

This day is also known as Ether Day, and honours a landmark day in medical history. It celebrates the scientific discovery that allowed patients to have operations without feeling any pain. 

This day also invites professionals to participate and to spread information and awareness on anaesthesia and how to safely administer it.

A 2023 study published in journal Pain and Therapy, notes: "Tianeptine is an antidepressant drug approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder in countries other than the US. It is classified as an atypical tricyclic antidepressant and has shown potential benefits in addressing anxiety and irritable bowel disease. However, it is important to note that tianeptine is not approved for any use by the United States Federal Drug Administration (FDA). Despite its lack of approval by the FDA, tianeptine has been distributed online and at small retail locations."

The term “gas station drugs” refers to a wide range of substances typically available for purchase from gas stations, corner stores, bodegas, mini marts, smoke shops, and the Internet. These substances may be produced commercially by drug manufacturers or in clandestine laboratories to mimic the effects of more well-known illicit/controlled substances such as marijuana, cocaine, opioids, etc.

The study also notes that misuse of tianeptine can lead to euphoric, opioid-like highs with the potential for chronic users to develop dependence and tolerance. Overdose and use in suicide attempts have also been documented. 

Its popularity stems from its ability to bind to the same brain receptors as opioids, which can create feelings of euphoria, calmness, and even pain relief. “It’s kind of this grey area of consumer products, or supplements, where the contents are not regulated or tested the way they would be with a medication,” explained Dr. Diane Calello of the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System. “You never quite know what’s in that bottle.”

It is called a silent invader for a reason. Once you inhale, the fungus can cause aspergillosis. This is a serious lung infection. The spores are microscopic, which mean hat people can breathe them in unknowingly. For patients who are already vulnerable medically, for instance, those battling cancer, asthma, HIV or recovering from organ transplants, the infection can lead to chronic lung disease, systemic organ failure, or even death. If invasive, it can also spread to your brain, hear, and kidneys.

Despite its potentially fatal consequences, aspergillosis is not classified as a reportable disease in the United States. This means infections are not systematically tracked, leaving health officials with limited data and making it harder to trace or contain outbreaks.

Between 2000 to 2013, hospitalizations have increased in the case of invasive aspergillosis in the US. The rate is reported by a 3% increased, annually. In 2014, the infection led to 15,000 hospital stays, with a cost up to $1.2 billion. 

As the US News notes, postmortem examinations in intensive care units suggest that aspergillosis is among the top four infections most likely to be fatal.

While about 400,000 Americans may be living with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis — the long-term form of the disease — invasive cases, though less frequent, are significantly deadlier. Survival rates drop sharply: just 59% of organ transplant patients and only 25% of stem cell transplant patients live beyond a year after infection.

The fungus thrives in hot, damp, and humid environment. They can also endure up to 120 degree Fahrenheit. This is especially true in compost or agricultural waste. States like Florida, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, and California — with their humid climates and farming activity — are seeing some of the highest exposure levels. Cities such as New York, Houston, and Los Angeles are also at risk due to overcrowding, aging buildings, and limited ventilation.

According to a University of Manchester study, if fossil fuel use continues at current levels, Aspergillus fumigatus could expand its range by over 75% by 2100 — putting millions more at risk across the southern US.

What is making it even more difficult to control is the increasing drug resistance. Azole drugs — commonly used to treat human fungal infections — are also applied to protect crops. This dual-use, experts say, may be fueling cross-environmental resistance, with drug-resistant spores jumping from soil to humans.

A study published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology found resistant fungal strains in agricultural soil across at least seven US states. Some strains are resistant to multiple standard antifungals, making treatment increasingly difficult.

WHO has also urged pharmaceutical companies to invest in new antifungals, including children in drug trials, and enhance diagnostic and treatment protocols globally.

As of now, doctors recommend to avoid contact with soil, mold, and gardening. It is important to wear protective masks when in dusty areas, and ensure good air filtration at home.

Although total test positivity is still relatively low in the U.S. at approximately 3%, the swift rise of Nimbus to become the second most prevalent variant—second only to LP.8.1 at 38%—has raised alarm among virologists and public health professionals. Although present infection and hospitalization levels are still within control, experts are warning of the possibility of a summer spike akin to cycles experienced in earlier years.

<h2>What Are The Painful Tell-Tale Symptoms of <span rel="noindex">New Covid Variant</span>?</h2>

One of the clearest indicators of the NB.1.8.1 strain is a symptom described by patients as a "razor blade feeling" in the throat. This sore throat—dull and stabbing particularly when swallowing—is reported more often among Nimbus sufferers than in previous strains. Specialists advise rest, hydration, and painkillers to treat this symptom.

Other frequently reported symptoms are fatigue, nasal congestion, cough, fever, muscle pain, and mild breathing difficulties, in line with previous Omicron subvariants.

On May 23, the World Health Organization designated NB.1.8.1 as a "variant under monitoring," noting its rapid worldwide spread and potentially high mutations. As of May 18, it was reported in more than 22 nations and now accounts for more than 10.7% of cases of COVID-19 worldwide.

In the United States, sequences deposited at GISAID corroborate its presence in at least 14 states, with public health officials anticipating wider geographic spread over the next few weeks. Trends from foreign health agencies and increasing hospitalizations in the U.K. imply a worldwide trend of enhanced transmissibility despite incomplete sequencing data.

<h2>How Dangerous Is Nimbus COVID Variant?</h2>

Although Nimbus is certainly more infectious, to date, there is no indication that it produces more severe illness than the previous ones. The WHO and the CDC both confirm that authorized COVID-19 vaccines continue to work against this variant, although breakthrough infections may happen.

The United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recently posted a near 10% increase in COVID hospitalizations and a 6.9% rise in cases in one week. UKHSA's deputy director, Dr. Gayatri Amirthalingam, stressed the point that while the variant is spreading, there is no immediate evidence of heightened severity of disease.

<h2>Will Nimbus Lead to a U.S. Summer Surge?</h2>

In the past, COVID-19 has increased twice a year in the United States—in the winter and then in the summer months, from June through August. That has been the case since 2020, and having a new, more contagious variant coupled with more travel and gatherings could set off another wave.

Experts warn that while population immunity in the U.S. is very high—with more than 90% of Americans having been infected or vaccinated—immunity does fade over time. Couple this with the immune-evasive nature of NB.1.8.1, and the recipe for a possible surge in cases is there.

Presently, WHO claims that current vaccines are protective against Nimbus. New COVID vaccines for the 2025–2026 season, designed to address LP.8.1, are set to be distributed this fall. In a contentious decision, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated that the vaccines will only be available for high-risk populations: persons above 65 years and persons between the ages of 12–64 with at least one comorbidity.

The CDC has also at the same time revised its guidelines, no longer advising routine COVID vaccination of healthy pregnant women and children—a step that most obstetricians and pediatricians object to.

With COVID wastewater levels still low and hospitalization rates stable, there is no need for mass panic. However, staying informed and cautious is key. Individuals experiencing symptoms like razor-sharp throat pain, fever, or congestion should consider testing, isolate if positive, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen—especially if they belong to high-risk groups.

Visitors are urged to watch for regional strain patterns, maintain proper hygiene, and wear masks in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces during peak travel seasons.
