Coffee Wrongly Labelled As Decaffeinated Gets Recalled: Is There Really A Difference?

What is the difference between caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee?

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled ground coffee in 15 states. This decision has come into play after it was found that these ground coffee may have been wrongly labeled as decaffeinated. Hundreds of 12-ounce bags of coffee were part of recall. The product belonged from the Our Family Traverse City Cherry Decaf Light Roast Ground Coffee and had been sold in Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming. 

However, the company confirmed that no other products were affected. The company said, "We are committed to your health and safety, and we follow best practices to ensure the quality and safety of the products we sell. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused." The statement was given to NBC News. 

The FDA categorized this as a II recall. It means that this is a "situation in which use of, or exposure of, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences." 

The <span>decaffeinated coffee</span> is the kind of coffee from where the caffeine removed. In this process, 97% of the caffeine is derived from coffee beans and is removed to create a decaf coffee. However, it is important to note that it is not entirely free of caffeine, but contains somewhere around 2 to 7 mg of caffeine per cup. 

However, regular cup of coffee contains around 70 to 140 mg caffeine in an average cup, the range may vary depending on the drink. 

Decaf coffee was for the first time was made commercially available in 1906 in Germany. The dates however are debated between 1903 and 1906, but it is confirmed to be available around the early 1900s. It was created by Ludwig Roselius, who thought his father died because of too much caffeine. This is when it became the mission of his life to create a blend that would taste the same as coffee but without what he thought was the 'poison' in it. It was caffeine. 

He accidentally found answer to his problems. It was during one of the coffee bean shipments that a box got immersed in seawater and when brewed it was discovered that the water had removed most of the caffeine content from the beans. This led to Roselius, patenting the way of steaming coffee to remove the caffeine. It is a process which is used even today. 

The process is known as the Roselius process. This is when the green coffee beans are steamed with a brine, which is a salt water solution. After this, benzene is used as a solvent to remove the caffeine. However, it is no longer used because it causes some serious health concerns as it decreases the production of red blood cells, and cancer in blood-forming organs. 

At this moment, there are four major processes used for decaffeination: Direct-Solvent Process, Indirect-Solvent Process, Swiss Water Process, and Carbon Dioxide Process.

<h4>What Is The Benefit of Decaf Coffee?</h4>

It is a healthier coffee as it could be ideal for reducing caffeine intake. It could also help you drink more coffee without negative effects of having to stay up late or dealing with insomnia. 

In fact, decaf coffee can help you sleep and has a milder taste.
