Are you a chai lover? How many cups of tea do you drink on a daily basis? If you drink more than 3 cups of chai in a day, then this is something you should know. Chai may not be the best thing your body needs.Though the first thing we do after a long day, or when we have a headache is to make tea, however, drinking too much of it can actually be bad for your health. Here's why:It can damage your gutTea contains tannins, a type of polyphenols, an antioxidant. Tannins damage the stomach lining and also increase acid. This is why some people may experience heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux after drinking tea. Low Iron absorptionHaving tea after your meal may hamper your ability to absorb iron by your body and may lead to iron deficiency, especially in those people who have low levels of iron already. Trigger AnxietyOne cup of tea also contains 10 to 60 mg of caffeine which can also trigger anxiety, and stress and make you hyperactive, making it difficult to sleep at night. It is because caffeine stimulates adrenaline and cortisol, so people who are already stressed out would feel more jitters. Other health issues if you drink too much teaCertain compounds in tea can also cause nausea, especially if it is consumed in large quantities on an empty stomach. Tannins in tea are also responsible for the bitter and dry taste of tea, and it can irritate the digestive tissue and potentially lead to uncomfortable symptoms, such as nausea or stomach ache. Drinking 1 to 2 cups, which is roughly 240 to 480 ml will not cause nausea, however, drinking 5 cups of tea, which is around 1.2 litres may cause ill effects. Caffeine can also relax the sphincter that separates your oesophagus from your stomach and allows the acidic stomach contents to flow easily into the oesophagus. It can also increase the stomach acid production. While it is a far-fetched fear, if you drink way too much tea, then the excess caffeine may also lead to pregnancy complications. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommend to not exceed the 200 mg mark for caffeine. This means it is best to not drink more than 3 cups of tea, which is roughly 710ml per day.
