Science has come a long way, it has made it possible for many to achieve their beauty standards. Whether it is a botox or a transplant, it is all possible. But does it come with any drawbacks? Especially for <span>breastfeeding</span> women? Can women with transplants breastfeed? To answer these questions, Dr Chetna Jain, Director Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Dr Reshma Siddhaye, Lactation Specialist at Surya Hospital and Dr Vipul Nanda, Chief Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery at Artemis Hospitals share their views and answer the most commonly asked questions on the same.

Dr Jain says that women with breast implants can breastfeed successfully. She points out that the success of breastfeeding depends on the location of the implants, the type of surgery and how your body heals. "Implants that are placed behind the muscle generally have a lower risk of affecting milk production compared to those placed directly under the breast tissue. If your surgery avoided cutting nerves and milk ducts around the nipple, it is more likely that you will be able to produce enough milk. However, women with incisions around the areola (periareolar incisions) may have a higher risk of breastfeeding challenges," she explains. 

However, lactation specialist Dr Reshma Siddhaye says that women with implants may establish breastfeeding at a slightly lower rate than women without implants. Some of the complications that she points out includes milk supply. "The placement of implants can disrupt the milk-producing tissue in the breast, which can lead to inadequate milk production," she point out. Other complications can be nipple sensation. "The surgical procedure can alter the sensation in the nipple and areola. This can also lead to leaking or ruptured implants. Breastfeeding can cause changes in breast size and shape, which can increase the risk of leaking or ruptured implants." 

In some cases for lactating mothers, peri-implant galactocele can also occur that can interrupt the mother from breastfeeding. 

However, Dr Nanda does mention that the type whether silicone or saline generally does not impact the ability to breastfeed. "Both types are designed to be safe for nursing mothers. However, some surgeons suggest that silicone implants may have a slight edge in terms of feeling more natural, which could contribute to comfort during breastfeeding. Ultimately, breastfeeding success majorly depends on the surgical technique used rather than the type of implant."

Dr Nanda also clarifies that breastfeeding with implants does not increase the risk of complications. However, the complications related to the implants themselves, such as rupture or capsular contracture, can occur irrespective of breastfeeding. 

Monitoring any changes in the breast appearance or shape is important, along with regular follow-up. 

Dr Jain says that it is safe for <span>babies</span> to breastfeed if their mothers have implants. There are no evidence that prove silicone or saline from the implants to pass into the breast milk in harmful amounts. 

Lactation expert also agrees and says that breast implants do not affect milk production. However, incisions around the areola may cut the milk ducts. 

Dr Nanda points out that the placement of breast implants may influence milk production. Some surgeons feel that implants placed under the muscle are less likely to interfere with breast tissue in comparison to those placed over the muscle. 

Dr Nanda says to maintain breast shape while breastfeeding, it is important for the mother to wear a supportive nursing bra that accommodates changes in size. The mother must also not wear overly tight clothing.

"Practice proper breastfeeding techniques to ensure a good latch. If required, expressing milk by using a breast pump may be considered to help manage fullness Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can also support overall breast health during this time," points out Dr Nanda.

Talking about specific precautions, here are some that Dr Siddhaye mentions:<ul><li> Breastfeeding frequently: Breastfeeding 8–10 times a day can help establish and maintain milk production.</li><li> Working with a lactation consultant: A lactation consultant can help ensure your baby is latching well and in a good position. They can also provide tips for nipple sensitivity.</li><li> Emptying breasts regularly: Emptying your breasts regularly can help with milk production.</li><li> Considering herbal galactagogues: Herbal galactagogues may help with milk production.</li><li> Supplementing with formula: Supplementing with formula may be necessary. This should be done only under the supervision of a medical professional.</li><li> Informing your baby's doctor: Your baby's doctor will monitor your baby's weight gain to make sure they're getting enough breast milk.</li></ul>
