<span>2024</span> is about to end, and this year taught us a lot, especially in terms of how to stay healthy and prevent from getting sick. However, the year was also called the year of <span>diseases</span>. In 2024, infectious diseases surged dramatically, with factors like climate change, declining vaccination rates, and emerging pathogen variants which play a significant roles.

As per a London-based disease forecasting firm Airfinity Ltd., preventable and climate-sensitive diseases are on the rise. It therefore emphasizes the need for a coordinated global response. 

By late December, <span><a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health/dengue">dengue</a></span> cases soared to over 13 million globally, this is more than double the figures from last year. Central and South America saw infections nearly triple, which led to near 10,000 deaths worldwide. Pertussis (whooping cough) cases also increased tenfold compared to 2023, and diseases such as <span><a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health/mpox">mpox</a></span>, <span>oropouche fever</span>, and <span><a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health/polio">polio</a></span> also saw alarming upticks.

The year also witnessed a record number of human avian influenza cases caused by the H5N1 virus, with 61 cases reported in the US alone. Additionally, Rwanda experienced its first outbreak of the Marburg virus, a deadly disease that causes severe hemorrhagic fever.

<h4>Climate Change: A Driving Force Behind the Surge</h4>

Data from 206 countries revealed that extreme temperatures and shifting climate patterns were major contributors to the rise of vector-borne diseases, transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks. 

Warmer climates allowed these vectors to thrive in new regions, exacerbating disease spread. Notably, 2024 is on track to be the hottest year on record, with global temperatures 1.62°C above pre-industrial levels in November, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

<h4>Post-Pandemic Immunization Challenges</h4>

Falling vaccination rates following the Covid-19 pandemic also played a significant role. Mpox, typically less severe than smallpox, caused hundreds of deaths this year due to a new strain in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The World Health Organization declared it a global public health emergency for the second time. Meanwhile, measles surged by 380% in the US and 147% in Europe, fueled by declining immunization rates.

In fact there have been reports of mysterious disease called the <span><a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health/dinga-dinga">Dinga Dinga</a></span> in Uganda too. Truly, this year was full of diseases. Kristan Piroeva, an analyst at Airfinity also highlighted the the urgent need for global data sharing and public health surveillance to combat preventable and climate-sensitive illnesses. What 2025 will bring, is yet to be seen!
