Trichomoniasis Is The Most Common STD, Know What It Is

Did you know that Trichomoniasis is one of the most common <a href="https://www.healthandme.com/health/sexually-transmitted-diseases">Sexually Transmitted Diseases</a> (STDs), and yet many do not know about it? As uncommon the name sounds, the disease is not so uncommon.

It is a common STD caused by the microscopic parasite Trichomoniasis vaginalis. While both men and women can be infected, women tend to be diagnosed more often, it might be due to the noticeable symptoms.

In women, the symptoms may include foul-smelling vaginal discharge, genital itching and painful urination. Whereas men who have trichomoniasis do not have any symptoms. However, in severe cases in men, clear or cloudy discharge from the urethra could be noticed, they may feel burning sensation during urination or after ejaculation, or irritation or mild itching inside the penis. Pregnant women have trichomoniasis may have higher risk of delivering babies prematurely. 

The infection is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. These parasites do not survive well outside the body, this is why it does not spread by kissing or sharing towels.

It can also spread by vulva-to-vulva contact, sharing sex toys, and engaging in other sexual practices. 

This is why test is important. Diagnosis usually involves a healthcare provider examining a fluid sample from the genital area under a microscope or using lab tests to confirm the presence of Trichomoniasis parasite. Testing also matters because many men do not have any symptoms and it can go untreated. Thus, regular or frequent testing can detect it at an earlier stage and could save the infected person from complications.

It is usually treated with antibiotics, commonly the nitroimidazoles, which is used to clear the infections in most cases. It is also important that both sexual partners are simultaneously treated even if one of them has the symptoms.

If you choose to ignore, it can lead to higher risks of contacting other STDs, especially HIV, it can also lead to pregnancy complications in women, or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).

It is important to always use a condom during sexual intercourse to lower the risk of infection. Reducing the number of partners also helps. Regulating STD testing is also a way to find out and be safe.

It is a treatable infection, however, the awareness among the people is not to much, which leads to more complications.
