GLP-1 medicines are increasingly being used for weight management, but women planning pregnancy or fertility treatment need to discuss the timing of these medicines with their doctor to allow an appropriate gap before conception. GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide and tirzepatide have become increasingly popular for weight management and are also used in the treatment of certain metabolic conditions. While improving weight and metabolic health can be beneficial for reproductive health in some women, these medicines are not recommended during pregnancy. Therefore, women who are planning to conceive or undergo fertility treatment need to plan the timing of their medication carefully. The exact time required between stopping the medicine and attempting pregnancy depends on the specific drug because different GLP-1 medicines remain in the body for different lengths of time. What Every Woman Should Know Pregnancy planning should come first: Women taking GLP-1 medicines who are considering pregnancy, IVF or other fertility treatments should inform their gynaecologist and the doctor prescribing the medication. Discontinuing is recommended prior to conception due to lack of safety data during pregnancy. The decision to stop or change treatment should be made under medical supervision rather than stopping the medicine suddenly on their own.The Timeline Is Not The Same For Every GLP-1 Medicine The timeline is not the same for every GLP-1 medicine: There is no single waiting period that applies to all GLP-1 drugs. The appropriate interval depends on the medicine, dose and the woman's individual health. Therefore, women should not follow a waiting period based on another person's medication or experience. Pre-conception wash-out recommended for Liraglutide is one month. Semaglutide requires a longer gap: For medicines containing semaglutide, including Wegovy and Ozempic, current prescribing information recommends discontinuing the medicine at least two months before a planned pregnancy because semaglutide has a long half-life and takes time to clear from the body. Also read: Nestlé Customizes Drinks For Ozempic, Wegovy Consumers: What Are Protein And Nutrition Needs of GLP-1 Users?Fertility Treatment May Need To Be Planned Around Medication Fertility treatment may need to be planned around medication: If a woman is preparing for IVF or another fertility treatment, the fertility specialist may coordinate with her physician to decide when the GLP-1 medicine should be stopped and when treatment should begin. This planning can also include reviewing weight, blood sugar, nutritional status and any medical conditions that may affect pregnancy.Weight Loss And Fertility Need To Be Balanced Also read: GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro Tied To Over 60 Reported Deaths In AustraliaWeight loss and fertility need to be balanced: For some women, improving obesity or metabolic health before pregnancy may be beneficial. However, rapid or excessive weight loss, inadequate nutrition or dehydration can also affect overall wellbeing. The goal should be to reach a healthy and stable state before conception rather than focusing only on the number on the weighing scale. Do not stop medication without medical advice: Women taking GLP-1 medicines for diabetes or another medical condition may need an alternative treatment after discontinuation. Blood sugar and other health parameters may need monitoring during this period, particularly before and during fertility treatment. A pre-conception consultation is important: Before attempting pregnancy, women should discuss their medications, medical history, menstrual health, nutritional status and fertility plans with their healthcare team. This allows doctors to create an individualised plan and ensure that both reproductive and general health are addressed. Women taking GLP-1 weight-loss medications should not assume that fertility treatment can begin immediately after stopping the medicine. The appropriate waiting period depends on the specific medication, and for semaglutide, current prescribing information recommends stopping it at least two months before a planned pregnancy. The safest approach is to plan pregnancy or fertility treatment in consultation with both the fertility specialist and the doctor managing the weight-loss or metabolic treatment.
