Just a day after marking World Pneumonia Day, multiple cases of "walking pneumonia" have emerged from across India. A mild yet persistent lung infection that mimics symptoms of a common cold. Unlike typical pneumonia, which can lead to severe lung inflammation and difficulty breathing, walking pneumonia is often less intense. Allowing people to carry on their daily activities, which is how it earned its name. It is also called 'silent' pneumonia because sometimes people don't experience symptoms despite X-rays showing fluid-filled air sacs in the lungs. Walking pneumonia is a type of atypical pneumonia most commonly caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The symptoms of this disease are often similar to those of a common cold or mild respiratory infection, including cough, soar throat, low-grade fever and fatigue. While walking pneumonia is typically not as contagious as flu or viral cold, it can still spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. This increases the likelihood of transmission in crowded places such as schools, offices, and public transport. Factors that may be contributing to the rising cases seen in clinics and hospitals across India. There is not enough evidence to point out a particular reason behind this condition but health experts say that it could be seasonal changes, rising pollution levels and a weak immune system acting together. What Is Pneumonia? It is a lung infection that causes the air sacs in the lungs to fill with fluid or pus and can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. The symptoms can range from milk to severe, which includes:Coughing with or without coughFeverChillsTrouble breathingChest pain, especially when breathing deeply or coughingSweating or chillsRapid heart rateLoss of appetiteBluish skin, lips, and nailsConfusionHow to detect Pneumonia in coughing newborns and toddlers?Pneumonia a serious lung infection that fills the air sacks in one or both lungs with fluid or pus. World Health Organization defines it as, "a form of acute respiratory infection that is most commonly caused by viruses or bacteria. It can cause mild to life-threatening illness in people of all ages, however, it is the single largest infectious cause of death in children worldwide."A significant indicator of this disease is a cough. However, living in a country with frequent season changes, cough is almost unavoidable. Moreover, besides pneumonia, cough could also be an indicator of a variety of diseases like viral infections, and tuberculosis (TB) amongst others.
