Often mistaken for a linear disorder, Autism is actually a spectrum disorder that can occur in anyone. While there are many misconceptions about the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), people have slowly educated themselves, leading to more diagnoses over the years. Mayo Clinic explains that this is a complex developmental condition that affects a person’s perception as well as social and communicational skills. According to Centers of Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) 2023 estimate, the prevalence of autism in children is 1 in 36. While there is no cure for autism, there are treatment options that can help them learn necessary skills like social, functional and behavioral skills. Another breakthrough that was made for ASD was a calming medicine made with CBD. A press release from European Psychiatric Association published on April 8 detailed how CBD might help kids and teens with autism. What Are Some Common Struggles That Autistic Children Face? Stanford Medicine explains that kids start showing symptoms from an early age. They may not be able to communicate, at times when they get frustrated, they may lash out and could act out in difficult ways to get their parents' attention. American Psychological Association explains that as kids with autism grow, they also find it difficult to deal with transitional periods like entering college, workforce, and living independently, etc. While neurotypical adults also face these issues, autistic children also have to deal with sensory issues, difficulty navigating social situations, as well as challenges with executive functioning. How Does CBD Help Autistic Kids? CBD is different from the part of cannabis. The study found that when children and teenagers with autism took CBD, they seemed to get better at talking to and connecting with other people. They also didn't have as many problems with behaviors that can be hard to manage. This suggests that CBD could be a helpful way to make it easier for young people with autism to interact with the world around them and feel more comfortable in social situations. How Does It Help With The Anxiety In Autistic Kids? The researchers also noticed that the children and teenagers in the study seemed less worried and stressed after taking CBD. Anxiety can be a big challenge for many people with autism, making everyday situations feel difficult. If CBD can help to calm these feelings of worry, it could make a big difference in their daily lives. This finding is exciting because it suggests that CBD might not just help with social behavior, but also with some of the emotional difficulties that can come with autism. The scientists shared these interesting results at a big meeting in Europe where doctors and researchers talk about the brain and mental health. It's important to do bigger studies with more children and teenagers to be really sure that CBD works well and is safe for them to use. These bigger studies will help doctors understand exactly how CBD helps and what the best way to use it might be. For now, this study gives us hope, but it's not yet a proven treatment for autism. We need more science to tell us for sure if CBD can be a helpful option for families and children dealing with autism.
