Industrialist, philanthropist and national icon Ratan Tata passed away late on Wednesday at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital. He was 86 years old and struggling with several age-related health issues including low blood pressure. While the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Group, just two days ago, issued a statement saying that he was in "good spirit," he was hospitalized for a condition called orthostatic hypotension (OH) wherein blood pressure suddenly drops. He was also suffering from other old-age health complications. How Common Is Sudden Drop In Blood Pressure? A sudden drop in blood pressure—known as orthostatic hypotension (OH) or postural hypotension—is common condition in elderly people. A person suffering from this sees a sudden drop in their blood pressure when sitting and standing or lying down. As a result, they feel dizzy or even faint. A study published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care found that more than 10 per cent of the elderly population aged 65 and older suffer from this condition. What are the symptoms of OH? Most common symptoms of orthostatic hypotension are dizziness or lightheadedness. However, a person could also experience the following: NauseaHeadacheWeaknessBlurred visionConfusionWhat Are Other Age-Related Health Issues? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), common conditions faced by older people include hearing loss, cataracts and refractive errors, back and neck pain and osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, depression and dementia. Hearing loss can manifest through symptoms such as difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy environments, frequent requests for repetition, and a general muffling of sounds. Individuals may also withdraw from conversations. Preventive measures include protecting the ears from loud noises with earplugs or earmuffs, avoiding prolonged exposure to loud environments, and getting regular hearing check-ups, particularly as one ages. Cataracts typically present with blurry or cloudy vision, increased difficulty seeing at night, sensitivity to light, and faded colors. To prevent cataracts, it is advisable to wear sunglasses that block UV rays, maintain a diet rich in antioxidants, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, and manage chronic conditions like diabetes.Refractive errors, which cause blurred vision at various distances, eye strain, and headaches, can often be managed with regular eye exams to ensure updated prescriptions. Practicing the 20-20-20 rule—looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes—can help reduce eye strain, as can wearing protective eyewear when necessary. Back and neck pain can manifest as a dull ache, sharp pain radiating to the limbs, stiffness, or muscle spasms. To prevent these issues, maintaining good posture, engaging in physical activity, using ergonomic furniture, and practicing stress-reduction techniques like yoga can be beneficial.Osteoarthritis symptoms include joint pain and stiffness, especially after activity or periods of rest, swelling around joints, and decreased flexibility. Preventive measures involve maintaining a healthy weight to lessen joint stress, participating in low-impact exercises, incorporating strength training, and using proper lifting techniques. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) presents with shortness of breath, a chronic cough with mucus, wheezing, and fatigue. Preventive actions include avoiding smoking, staying active, getting vaccinated against respiratory infections, and effectively managing chronic conditions.Diabetes symptoms often include increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme fatigue, blurred vision, and slow-healing sores. Prevention focuses on maintaining a healthy diet low in refined sugars and high in fiber, engaging in regular physical activity, and monitoring blood sugar levels. Depression can manifest as persistent sadness, loss of interest in once-enjoyed activities, changes in appetite or sleep, and difficulty concentrating. Preventive strategies involve fostering strong social connections, engaging in physical activity, practising mindfulness, and seeking professional help when needed.Dementia symptoms can include memory loss, confusion with time or place, and changes in mood or personality. To help prevent dementia, staying mentally and socially active, maintaining a healthy diet—especially the Mediterranean diet—managing cardiovascular health, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are recommended.
