A new device is making waves in the UK for it's treatment of acid reflux, a digestive condition that affects nearly 20% of the population in the Western world. This innovative implant, made from medical-grade rounded silicone and roughly the size of a ping pong ball, is designed to be fixed to the upper stomach wall. Called RefluxStop, its primary function is to block the movement of the lower oesophageal sphincter, helping to maintain its natural position and restore normal anatomy and function. RefluxStop implant is fitted using robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive procedure that takes less than two hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. This means patients can typically go home the same day. What Is Acid Reflux?Known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), this condition occurs when stomach contents flow back into the oesophagus—the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach.
